In 2016, George Soros spent millions on progressive district attorney campaigns in six states. His efforts paid off, with 126 progressive prosecutors holding office at various times. “By 2024, at least 30 percent of Americans lived under the jurisdiction of a Soros-funded prosecutor,” Josh Appel writes.

Increasingly, the Democratic Socialists of America appears to be adopting the same model. The group is focusing more on small, local elections like city council, state assembly, and state senate, and the strategy is proving effective.

“Besides the highly visible Zohran Mamdani, DSA candidates hold approximately 250 local political positions across the 50 states,” Appel points out. “That includes 96 city councilors and county commissioners, in addition to eight mayors, county executives, and town supervisors.”

Before New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani can raise taxes by $7 billion, he needs approval from the state.

Jared Walczak argues that Albany should reject the tax increases. “The revenue benefits would flow exclusively to New York City,” he writes, “while the whole state would shoulder the costs—including suffering a blow to economic productivity and further erosion of the Empire State’s already crumbling tax base.”

That blow to productivity could mean a $17 billion loss while costing the state about $2 billion in revenue.
