Steven Malanga Selected Responses: Sent by Albert Krause on 08-30-2007: The sad thing is most folks in Jersey don't give a damn. There was a Pew poll posted a few weeks ago showing that the majority of the inhabitants of Sopranostan wanted the illegal to be legalized, rather than deported.
The whole situation is complicated by racial attitudes as well. Many Jerseyites would prefer the illegals to blacks as their service class, as there is not the legacy of mistrust among the former (so they believe). Also, most illegals tend to concentrate in older areas that were losing population or decaying before they arrived. It's not like the average inhabitant of Chatham or Middletown has to worry about a family of illegal Ecuadorians moving next door, as they are effectively ghettoized in places in Paterson, Dover, and Hightstown. Another issue to consider is that a significant population of New Jersey are either legal immigrants or the children of legal immigrants (from places as diverse as India, Korea, Greece, Cuba, and the Phillippines), and are not exactly the type of folks that would rally around the preservation of "Anglo" culture.
