The Last Full Measure
Steven Malanga Selected Responses: Sent by Penny Heisler on 09-10-2006: Thank you for this moving story of the memorials to 9/11. I had difficulty reading to the end because of the tears and the emotion in my heart.
I am an active duty Navy nurse and see daily those who have fought or are about to leave for the fight against the fascists that are still at work. I will never forget that day and will also work to signify the memory this Monday. I run a clinic for Marines that is staffed by a wonderful collection of sailors (corpsmen). One of them was 2 blocks from the towers and saw the second plane hit. We are all going to voice our remembrances of that day and renew our commitment to our country and our thankfulness for the wonderful blessing of being American.
My husband and brother-in-law are firemen, one daughter is a naval officer, one nephew is a navy flight officer, another is stationed on the USS Carl Vinson and my son is a Marine. God bless America. Sent by Carol Kelley on 08-19-2006: I just want someone to know how touching I found "The Last Full Measure" by Steven Malanga, the piece about suburban tributes to the murdered souls of 9/11.
There is hardly a day passed that I don't think of those people, and wonder why the "official" memorial sites for the towers, as well as Flight 93, have been so botched. It's heartening (though bittersweet) to read and see the beautiful memorial sites put up elsewhere.
