My first introduction to Islam was in primary school by a Christian Brother who knew what boys wanted – blood and guts. He said that Islam was a religion of the sword. I still believe it. And in the Yugoslavic breakup Muslims flocked to experience their own "Boy's Own Adventure" like Tom Brown's Schooldays.

Just look at the first 200 years of Islam. All north Africa most of the Middle East and entry to Europe both east and west. What I can't understand is the conversion. There is no history only myth.

Here is the cause of the problem. Islam is existential, everlasting and explosive. Existential because the Koran can't change. Everlasting because the Koran can't change. Explosive because the Koran is a male chauvinist religion. Man, the Hero, is Supreme, Self-righteous and Superman with a direct entry to Allah “May God accept him as a martyr” dying for the cause.

'The Australian' years ago had proverbial advice for business. One I saw was an early Arab story. With commerce through Arabia going back thousands of years – Afghanistan blue stones are part of funereal costumes of Pharaohs 5000 years ago.

The rewriters of Mohamed's story 100 years after had an advertising slant, both for the male ego and as inducement to join the religion. A belief, whatever it is, has supreme psychological effect. Being Jesus Christ occurs regularly, whatever the expert says. So too with Islamist.*

But one cause for unrest is overpopulation. Islamic countries (with Mexico & Philippines) double in population in about 30 years. TEN times increase since WWII. They have to have the greatest GDP increase in the world just to stand still. Mouse plagues show how mice react to stress and as I keep saying Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs start to act both for mice and humans. – what the religion says is how people react to their needs.

Christianity says suffer.

Islam says fight!

* Usama bin, only found religion when his avenue to greater wealth was cut off by corrupt Saudis.
Clearly the one in need of an editor is you.

"So he blew himself up in “an enemy village”—most helpful. Never was feeble ratiocination so completely mixed with moral grandiosity. Here is the reductio ad absurdum of May 1968."
What? Here is the reductio ad absurdum of May 1968??? Are we supposed to understand this non-sequitur vis-a-vis French jihadis going to Syria? Oh, yes just like the protests then. He Does anyone edit this guy? The last time he was confusing Beckett with Camus.
In 1948 my American Jewish father desperately wanted to fight in the Israeli War of Independence. (His mother wouldn't hear of it!) Isn't this analogous to the French Arab youth wanting to fight in Syria? The difference is the French Arabs have no loyalty to France. My father was both a patriotic American and a lifelong Zionist. (His grandchildren live in Israel now.)

'Thomasina Szasz,
nobody said that "avoidance of work was all that was wrong with these patients", therefore your rant is offensive without any merit.'

It is now you deliberately omitted the word 'if'.

'As hundreds of his articles on this site document, Mr. Dalrymple's patients were persons with very tangible problems (hence his duty to treat them), whose recurring source was more often than not a distorted understanding of personal and public life: a dystopia ceaselessly disseminated by powerful cultural elite.'

What are you saying here: that the mentally ill are part of some conspiracy theory to undermine society and the morale of superdocs like Dalrymple? I think you should get yourself a tin foil hat.

The point was perfectly simple: psychiatrists are under no obligation to treat those who are devoid of mental illness on a long term basis just as an oncologist is under no obligation to treat a patient devoid of cancer on a long term basis. I don't see what is so difficult to understand about that.

And mental illness has been with us for a lot longer than your 'dystopia ceaselessly disseminated by powerful cultural elite.' Of course we handled it very differently, often leaving it to theology.

The Victorians established asylums which were razed to the ground in the twentieth century during the process of deinstitutionalisation. Not a murmur of protest was heard from the good doctor and his colleagues.

No offence meant but are you being deliberately obtuse?
Thomasina Szasz,
nobody said that "avoidance of work was all that was wrong with these patients", therefore your rant is offensive without any merit.

As hundreds of his articles on this site document, Mr. Dalrymple's patients were persons with very tangible problems (hence his duty to treat them), whose recurring source was more often than not a distorted understanding of personal and public life: a dystopia ceaselessly disseminated by powerful cultural elite.
"why would Americans fund the Irish Republican Army?" I don't know if you mean the US government in some way but I do know - having lived in San Francisco during some of the early and worst times of IRA terrorism - that money was regularly asked for and received by people who claimed to be collecting for the IRA. In that case it was an instance of casually supporting killers because it was a cool thing to do and people were undoubtedly drunk and if not drunk filled with an egotistical bile that helped them justify their cowardly contributions.
Devil worship leads to perdition. Interestingly enough (re: peter1589), Martin Luther in his time, saw the Turk in those very same terms: As a tool of the devil himself, yet also as the embodiment of the wrath of God, meting out punishment for our sins.
France should welcome the export of their fanatics. The Saudis have been funding and exporting their religious zealots and candidates for martyrdom for years...better to have them anywhere other than home.

why would Americans fund the Irish Republican Army?

A better question would be why did the English fall away from the One True Faith after Henry VIII's lust got the better of him and Cromwell was ordered to go savage the Irish? They hunted down Catholics throughout the kingdom and sealed their fate.

There was an interesting movie rerun recently about Elizabeth I. The narrative took note of the immense economic bounty which came about because of Elizabeth's leadership. Small wonder. Christ has no place to lay his head, but the fox had its lair and the swallow its nest, He made England prosperous so Elizabeth would have no excuse when she went to her Judgment about how God treated her with luxury.

The carnage inflicted upon the Irish since the PROTEST-ant "revolution" (read, abject theological confusion) has hardly been the Irish's fault. Recall again Cromwell and all those who followed after him, instructed by the crown to do their worst against those dastardly papists.

But who has remained intact for 2,000 years? Yes, the potato famine sent thousands away from Ireland to the New World because the Blessed Virgin needed the Faithful in the New World to offset the losses of souls caught up in the innumerable PROTEST-ant heresies.

It was no error that as the so-called "Reformation" was breaking out in Europe, Spanish conquistadors were conquering the America's and spreading the Faith. With guns, germs and steel, the superior culture almost eradicated the pagans, yet even so creating the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the tilma of Blessed Juan Diego.

Why would Americans fund the IRA? Because we've read the book and we know who wins in the end. God bless, and pray the Rosary daily for peace.

Because these things would never occur in the good old US of A.??

Clearly your tongue in cheek citation indicates a conviction on your part that the USA is equally culpable. And you are exactingly correct. Obama sent back a bust of Winston Churchill that was in the oval office. Why? English domination of South Africa and other sub-Saharan "nations." He resents whites. He is putting Muslim Brotherhood members into the government in exceedingly more important positions almost weekly. I just saw a mosque emptying out the other day and there were hordes of Muslim men, and not one woman. Where do we see the equivalent in Catholic Churches today? I've been practicing the Faith for over 25 years now, and not very well at all, mind you. I have yet to see an equal representation of strong young men in any Catholic Church I have visited. Why? God is getting ready for an amazing Great Chastisement and, like He did for the Jewish people when they fell off their religion, He is now raising hordes of satan's faithful to wreak havoc on western civilization.

The PROTEST-ant "revolution" only made a laughing stock of theology as they distilled and diluted into over 59,000 differing, back-biting sects, not one of which could agree with the next.

They treat John 6 like it is a metaphor and nothing more. They could not be more incorrect.

Unless you eat My Body and drink My Blood, there is no life in you. That's our Lord speaking. Who take it seriously? Are we not all entrapped by the siren call of the IPhones, the Ipads, the laptops, the radio, the Musak, the TV, the DVD's, etc.? Do we not all own automobiles which would make 17th century royalty green with envy at the power, the environmental controls, the smooth rides, the preeminent freedom of the little guy today?

And the Blessed Mother has been almost screaming for attention at Lourdes, La Sallette, Fatima, Akita, Garabondol and Medjugorje, to name but a few and WHO LISTENS?? No one.

And so, liberalism and its license to sin has the day, exactly as satan wants it to be. He has pulled the coats and sweaters over our heads and is beating our brains out with temptation and diversion and worldly care upon worldly care, choking us into complete disregard for the state of our souls.

Who can even make a decent examination of conscience these days? Who dares study the 10 commandments or the teachings of the Church? Why has Catholicism stubbornly remained intact for 2,000 years against all odds and FAR beyond any nation or man-made institution?

BECAUSE CHRIST IS THERE IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM, IGNORED, DISDAINED, DISBELIEVED AND DISRESPECTED, while everyone converses with their lover, their 1 or 2 kids, their spouses or their friends, and barely take notice of Him RIGHT THERE in the Blessed Sacrament.

So here comes Islam to chastise us, and fire from Heaven is not far behind, as the Blessed Virgin told the late Father Gobbi in St. James in Seattle. The living will envy the dead, says She. Unimaginable, but VERY soon to occur. Pray the Rosary if you know what's good for you. And you don't.
Prohibiting French Muslims from going to Syria is the wrong approach. They should ENCOURAGE French Muslims to go to Syria. They should prohibit them from coming back.

It's a form of mental illness. What else could account for such hyper
idealism?
The second-to-last sentence of Mr. Dalrymple's article hits the nail on the head, "..feeble ratiocination so completely mixed with moral grandiosity." Fanatics, of whatever stripe, combine an overblown sense of self-importance (combined with a sense of entitlement) with an overwhelming sense of being oppressed and down-trodden.

Since the reality of their situation is so at odds with what they believe is their due, they look for someone to blame for their miserable condition, becoming paranoid and suspicious. Two very good books on the subject are, Paranoia and Modernity by John Farrell, which looks at the development of this mindset as revealed in the literature of the West, and The Paranoid Vision, by Mark Dillof, which contains a chapter on Islamic fundamentalism.

Nihilism - the World's new religion.
Like the Boston brothers---just another pair of losers.
On a related note (terrorism):

why would Americans fund the Irish Republican Army?

'The fact of the matter is that since France's revolution led to "Liberté" it really didn't mean Liberté, it meant "license," or freedom to commit sin. Prostitutes danced upon the high altar of Notre Dame, thinking that they were the new leaders of La Liberté. or freedom to commit sin.'

Because these things would never occur in the good old US of A.

The Statue of Liberty? Now what did that mean?

You could always send it back. Warning: you don't get a refund on gifts.
'As it happens, I treated a number of patients who refused to work for the same reason. They believed that, under the current system, they would never receive the full value of their labor.'

Labor?

If the avoidance of work was all that was wrong with these patients then you were under no obligation to treat them.

In fact, as a publicly employed psychiatrist you had a duty not to treat them.

Most NHS psychiatrists know this. Why don't you?
The fact of the matter is that since France's revolution led to "Liberté" it really didn't mean Liberté, it meant "license," or freedom to commit sin. Prostitutes danced upon the high altar of Notre Dame, thinking that they were the new leaders of La Liberté. or freedom to commit sin.

Today everyone has forgotten what the word "sin" really means. The forces have, interestingly enough, been a trio, i.e., (a) sex, (b) drugs, and (c) rock 'n roll.

The Sexual Revolution led us to ignore Christ Jesus's emphatic warning that to even look upon a woman with lust was to commit adultery. Did Penthouse or Playboy care? Hell, no.

Drugs were diagnosed as being "recreational" and how many were so inebriated and stoned that despair gripped them into suicide, adultery, abortion, and rampant STD's, including mortal contamination with HIV/AIDS.

Rock 'n Roll was satan's devilish little insinuation of mockery toward Peter, the Rock upon whom Christ built His Church. Roll is a piece of bread, again a mockery of satan against the Bread of Life or the Eucharist. Just think of all the rampant encouragement to the license to commit sin has come out of the beat and simplistic harmonies found in rampant rock 'n roll.

Fast forward to the priestly crisis where thousands and thousands of communist agents invaded the Church priesthood in order to attempt to destroy the Church from within. Like we haven't been trying to do so ourselves by our sins for the past 2,000 years? Could we do it? Nope. Could they? Nope. Reagan, Pope John Paul II and Maggie Thatcher saw to that.

Did we learn from our sins? Nope, the PROTEST-ant Revolution made Almighty Relativism the rule of the day so we could reinvent God and make Him in our own image.

The churches are abandoned, soccer and football are the rule for Sundays, fornication's down sides of the wholesale destruction of the family via divorce, STD's and emotional/psychological disaster has taught us nothing.

Today we are able to change our home and automotive environments with a mere flick of a switch. We drive cars which the Kings of France and all the rest of Europe could not even begin to imagine the luxury thereof. Our immediate gratification has been ensured by bank's profligate lending of lines of credit against the home and millions of people are now homeless because (a) they swallowed the bait and (b) they murdered their babies in the womb by either birth control or abortion and now have nowhere to lay their heads because their children ended up in the sewers for rat food.

Now Islam is overrunning Europe and America. Is it any surprise God has sent the selfsame tribe of people to harass and punish us for our sins that He sent to inflict punishment upon the Jews for their sins?

Give it some thought, folks. And quickly, because according to St. Malachy, Pope Francis is the last one before the Great Chastisement spoken of by the Blessed Virgin in Her extensive appearances in places like Garabondol, Akita, La Salette, Fatima and Medjugorje and elsewhere.

Do we listen? Hell, no. And then where will we find ourselves at the termination of our mortal lives, which comes like a thief, we know not when, how, by whom or where. PRAY THE ROSARY at a minimum and DO PENANCE.
As you surely know, French citizens of North African descent have battled racism and poverty for decades. You describe those going to Syria with great contempt. You seem interested only in venting disgust. I can't see how your views will alleviate terrorism.
Couldn't help thinking while looking at the book cover. We seem to have a disproportionate number of mentally disturbed people in this world. I suspect only God can fix.
Lee asks "how can we reach these people"? There is no reaching a fanatic because they do not react to reason. If they did they would realize that if they really want to contribute to the jihad they say they are committed to they would try to stay alive so they could go on killing the enemy. Once they are dead they are no use to any cause they claim to care about. Forget about "reaching" them; they intend to die; they are suicidal but too cowardly to simply go out and shoot themselves in the desert somewhere or jump off a neighborhood bridge. They want to make their suicide look heroic but it is not heroic ~ it is the act of a self-absorbed loser.
What seems to be lacking or missing, forgotten or never learned, is the maxim Moses handed down to the Children of Israel, when he came down from Mt. Sinai with the Tablets of the Ten Commandments. After Excoriating them for their apostasy while he was aloft, he said to them, simply and clearly, CHOOSE LIFE!
What does it say for a religion that commands its young and all the rest to choose death?
Great story & analysis. I wonder you can comment on the large numbers of such disaffected youth in France, compared to other nations, and why?
First Dr. Dalrymple says, that his patients , like Nicolas, in refusing to work in our exploitative society, seem to miss that they are consuming the labours of those exploited as they live in our world. Fair enough. Doesn't that tragically mean Nicolas' suicide is saying, I can't live that society? I think the usually astute doctor is missing something tragically important here. Nicolas can be accused of wrong thinking in his life but he was constant unto his death.
The question becomes how can we (society, any society) reach these people better than the islamist recruiters? What is the element that is so similar to the same "cults" of the Jim Joneses of the world, that is overwhelming all of our young? I don't think there has been such a massive, global movement affecting the world like this since the crusades. What can we do to counteract this plague of the innocents?
I am a fully-aware consumer but I criticize the capital/consumer system, do I need a therapy?

P.S. I'm also fully-aware that I'm not brainwashed by religion nor a psycho to use violence
Islam is the ideology of lunatics and criminals.
Tell me again, what's wrong with muslims killing other muslims??
What would induce an American living in the US in 1939 to join the RAF? There's a war on in Syria. Neither side has clean hands, but a young man may surely be forgiven for deciding that the Assad regime's hands are so dirty that nothing else really matters.

We're talking nerve gas, after all. And just today, CBS news reported that a Syrian regime defector went to the UN etc. with photos he himself took of the remains of 11 thousand Syrians that had been starved and tortured to death by the regime in its prisons. The report included some representative photos, and he had the goods.

Blowing yourself up in an `enemy village' is poor tactics as well as execrable morals, but the basic sentiment has its merits. There's even a phrase: Homma rules, meaning, no rules at all. In memory of what Bashir's father did to the Syrian city of Homma, back when.
