I suspect that the shooting occurred something like this. Bin Laden was first hit in the chest during the fire fight, and he went down but probably still alive. The SEAL then finished him with a second round to the head. The entire operation to and from the compound including time on the ground probably took 2&1/2 hrs inside Pakistan. Where was the Pakistani Air force and Radar? Under an umbrella of US stealth fighter planes. I bet an ultimatum was issued by phone immediately after the call "Geronimo" to the Pakistani military: "Stand down or be shot down." Don't interfere with this mission.

Even though Bin Laden wasn't living in a cave, the latest reports indicate that, when shot, he A) Wasn't armed; and B) Did not use his wife as a human shield.
There is nothing about being a genocidal ideologue that precludes one from bravery or taking risks. Hitler won the Iron Cross during WWI, and some of the toughest German fighters in WWII were the Nazi zealots of the Waffen SS. Nor did anyone ever underestimate the fighting abilities of the Soviets, communist Chinese, Koreans or Vietnamese.
