Yes - exactly the same Left-wing media hysteria here in Londonistan - his supposed links with 'extreme right-wing groups', copy of 'Mein Kampf' under the bed - and the subsequent deafening silence when it transpires that he is actaully Jewish with links to EXTREME LEFT-WING groups - not to mention the extreme racism of judging a man by his looks i.e this man looks like the media interpretation of a 'Right-Wing Eztremist'. 'plus ca change'.
Thank you, Mr. Klaven. The insanity is so thick. Your words are like a breath of fresh air.
Klavan rings the bell again! You on FIRE bro!
Thank you for calling it like it is...an evil, a sickness of the spirit, a corruption of the sole, A madness that's been around for as long as night has turned to day. And this evil does its perfect work once again, by confusion and blame instead of simply shining the light of truth on it and exposing it for what it is.
David Appell;

If the elderly are depending on Social Security and Medicare (ie: the taxed assets of younger workers who pay for these programs) then they are not leading "independent lives".

Both programs are going to go bankrupt in a few years. I would not call them "successful policies"
You've taken the Krugman comment out of context to make it sound as if he truly wanted to see Lieberman hanged in effigy. This was obviously your feeble attempt to make a Progressive columnist sound as bad as possible. What Krugman actually said was as follows: "A message to progressives----by all means, hang Joe Lieberman in effigy. Declare that you are disappointed in and/or disgusted with President Obama. Demand a change in the Senate rules that, combined with the Republican strategy of total obstructionism, are in the process of making America ungovernable. But meanwhile, pass the health care bill." Krugman later clarified this statement to make clear that he did not wish any physical harm to Senator Lieberman. You've make other misstatements in your hateful rhetoric, but I won't go into them at this time.
The illogic of the left's response--rather like when something bad happens sacrificing a child to appease the gods--is not that surprising. Rather than accepting the random evil of the universe they want to explain it and find the cause, rather funny when you think of it since many of them are deeply opposed to the idea that God exists and in fact argue against the Christian God for letting evil things happen, then at the same time looking for what caused it. Tis is nothing but the old paganism looking to its gods to make sense of things.
Mr Klavin,

In your 1/9/11 City Journal article (“The Hateful Left: Where incendiary political rhetoric truly resides in America”) you write

“…the Left’s sudden talk about incendiary political rhetoric… (is) about the real-world failure of leftist policies everywhere…”

How have the left’s policies failed, especially since FDR? The elderly now lead independent lives, instead of having to live in their children’s attics. They have the medical care they need, especially since the advent of Medicaid, including George W Bush’s Medicare Part D.

Life expectancy statistics have increased enormously in this century, mostly due to “left-wing” policies.

Would you really rather that my parents, and yours, go without the medications they need to survive and prosper?

Many, many other citizens, like me, now have access to the health care they need, because they are utterly unable to purchase it on the free market. Would you really prefer that I suffer in pain and do without needed medical care?

Have you ever had to go without the medical care that you needed?

David

KUDOS! EXCELLENT! BRAVO! I found this on the Mike Malloy site and really wanted to comment, but I didn't want to be affiliated with him in any way! This is a superb article!
Jared Loughner has mentioned Mind Control in his video.
Thousands people have claimed that they have been torturing and abusing by covert Mind Control Weapons (and Directed Energy Weapons).

All you need to know about the state of the Democrat Party is it is completely bankrupt of creativity!
No one has to ' make Sarah Palin out to be an idiot ' you only have to hear her speak for a few minutes to discover that she is one. She is ' full of sound and and fury ' and it signifies nothing . The very idea that she should have been put forward as a Vice Presidential candidate tells you all you need to know about the state of the Republican Party . It is bankrupt of creativity .
Beautifully written - I've always been torn between recommending that conservatives not rise to the bait and respond to this nonsense - thereby allowing Democrats to continue to be able to set the agenda - and thereby providing free publicity to certain otherwise obscure personalities, or simply ignoring it, thereby hastening the day when few people will be listening or watching the formerly all powerful Democrat media.

Here, there is little choice - the Democrat media's craven misuse of this terrible event screams for response.

Mr. Klaven said it all, except for this: Conservatives need to be much smarter, and to do a better job of picking and choosing battles. And conservatives need to understand that the strength of the vast Democrat media machine lies in its ability to make money, and that is dependent on how many people watch and listen. A concerted effort by conservatives to avoid the Democrat media lessens its power. And, after all, what is the Democrat left without its stranglehold on the traditional media? Not much, not much at all.

Conservatives also need to research why the traditional media is so biased in favor of Democrats - there is something going on here which no one has truly examined. It started some time in the 1930's with William Paley at CBS radio - there were complaints of pro-Democrat bias even back then. Was it simply the fact that the control of the media was in the Democrat east that led to what we have today? But, why would media stick to the pro-Democrat biases when twice as many people in the country are conservative - doesn't that hurt the bottom line?

Since when in business is ideology more important than money? And why is there not a single newspaper in a major city with a bias going the other way? And, in a capitalist system, where the mantra is to find a need and fill it, has not a single one of the traditional networks seen fit to compete with Fox for conservative viewers? Imitation of success is not simply common in broadcasting, it is a way of life - in the cable market Fox is not only doing better than it's competitors it regularly comes close to to doing better than all of its competitors combined. Why would not a single one of them go after Fox by seriously competing for conservative viewers?
Wouldn't this be a way for CNN to solve its problems? Yet when CNN searches for new hosts it goes to leftist pro-Democrats, not to conservatives. Why? Why? Why - when this clearly is going to fail?

The answers to these questions is sometimes presented with a simplistic, even silly statement that "the executives at the traditional networks are drinking koolade." That's not an answer. There has to be some reason that no one has discovered or bothered looking into, that causes so-called professionals in the news and entertainment business to elect not to serve a large part of the audience. No one is looking into this, no one has seriously examined why the traditional networks are biased. And why it took a complete outsider - someone from Australia (!) - to discover that serving conservatives made business sense.

Would someone please look into this and let me know?
Well said Andrew. The Left knows their days are counted and they grow more desperate.
Never heard of this guy before - my loss. I'll be watching for him in the future... Andrew Klavan's one impressive thinker.
"...the Left’s hysterical response to all who disagree with it—that they are racist or sexist or 'phobic' or somehow reminiscent of Hitler..."

And this is completely different from the Right's hysterical response to all who disagree with it - that they are socialist or facist or 'with the terrorists' or somehow reminiscent of Hitler.

Do you really want to argue that all of the hate is on one side?
Because of their dishonesty the left will not be writing how just after the "shellacking" Obama and the Dems took, Hillary's former campaign aide suggested in November 2010 on MSNBC Hardball with Chris Mathews that Obama clearly needed an Oklahoma City bombing incident he could manipulate to garner better approval ratings in the polls just as Clinton did in 1994. Yeah, now there's some hope and change you can believe in.

Not only does it demonstrate clearly the hypocrisy of the left this past week but also demonstrates the cynical lack of morals and lack of ethical sensitivity the "professional left" has ingrained in their DNA. Mark Penn is a Clintonista and an unethical bloodthirsty political opportunist to his very core.

The likelyhood that Mark Penn and other leftists are behind this "coincidence" for Obama to do a Clinton and emote for the dimwits in this nation to turn them to his favor again is a far greater "opportunity" for the leftists of the Democrat Party than any benefit they can possibly wrench form their twisted and sick manipulations of the truth about the attack this past Saturday.

Just watch today at the remembrance service as Obama tries out his imitation of the great Emoter in Chief Clinton. Can Obama find in himself any ability at all to display believable sorrowful emotion and bring the nation to tears and share with us all his heartfelt sorrow and remorsefulness at our current state of political discourse? Oh, praise the Lord. Preach to us messiah. Show us, dear leader Obama what ministering skills you learned by osmosis during your 20 years of nodding off at the Reverend Wright's sermoninzing about "G_d America, the KKK America." Preach it, Obama!

Mark Penn is no doubt smiling now.
Comparing "Liberals" (Left) to Right is like comparing the rapist to his victim, There is no symmetry here.

These are the "Liberals"/Left that redistribute incomes in the name of "social justice" or helping the "less fortunate", while the main objective is to help the minorities to have many children that survive to their reproductive age (typically, with taxpayers' assistance) so that there is enough proletariat at some point to spark a socialist revolution.

These are the "Liberals"/Left that cripple the economy and free market by taxation, reckless lending (a scam developed by Carter, Clinton, Johnson, Dodd, Frank, and few others). America was leading economic power with clear technological superiority until the "Liberals"/Left begun administer their draconian prescriptions in the 1960ties so now we are indebted to teeth and struggling with economic meltdown while other, previously laughingly weak countries, like China and several Arab states, are booming.

Perhaps every major economic problem that our country faces today may be traced to 1960ties when "Liberals"/Left delivered the first in a series of blows to American dream turning it little by little into a nightmare. Now, they are blaming everybody else for the ill effects that these blows have caused.

Our nation is being raped by "Liberals"/Left and yet the conservative are the ones that are being blamed for screaming and resisting.

Absolutely no symmetry here. The only acceptable compromise is that you stop raping us now and be separated from power for the damage that y9ou have already inflicted..

You accuse the left of being hateful while the right sanctions the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Rielly, etc.? There are crazies on both sides to be sure, but to not acnowledge that the crazys on your side have a seat at the grown-up's table is delusional. You could have made your own points with so much less venom, but I guess it best to see it for what it is.

Sarah Palin is an idiot, any time someone uses a four sylable word, she whines that someone is out to call her a boob. George Bush and his ilk did cause this economic calamity by pulling down the regulations that make the wonderful capitalist game sencible and some what fair. Bill Clinton is just as culpable by bringing down the Glass Spaigel act. Keith Olberman is culpable for his hyperbole. But they both will admit mistakes, and neither one is the bully your side all to readily admits in its ranks. To not be able to aknowledge these facts betrays a intellectual one sidedness that will never help bring our country together. And that is what is should always be about. Politics is fun and at times savage, but we are in this together, whether you like it or not. We both make mistakes, but it's sad that right now your vitriolic article helps to pull us apart.
blame. blame. blame blame blame. Someday someone will reach out and stop pointing fingers. Just not here.
On America's Morning News this morning, you conflated schizophrenia with multiple personality disorder (or split personality or dissociative identity disorder).
None of these is the same as schizophrenia, although the public often conflates the two disorders
Narrative Hysteria... sounds like a good book title!
Superb ! But unfortunately...30 years too late.
This comment is for open-minded readers and NOT addressed to the author of the citation, below; those who fell for "Liberalism" are unlikely to change their dogmatic political believes no matter how many contradicting facts are presented to them.

QUOTE "To assert that both sides of the political aisle use violent rhetoric in equal measures is simply delusional"

That is true.

The Left is hysterical, desperate, and militant in their attempts to defend their false dogmas and to implement them. If they don't have their way they resort to Leftist revolution. And they have always had the tendency to project their sinister intentions (like some 150 years of international Left-wing conspiracy to install some form of socialism worldwide) on others.

The so-caller "Right" just defends this great country from Left's assaults. Left's accusations of violence on the right can only be compared to charging a victim of attempted murder with violence of deadly defense.
Thanks for penning such an insightful article. I dare any serious leftist intellectual to read this article and write a defense of the currect leftest barrage.
That the Left compares conservatives to Hitler is absurd beyond comprehension. Not only conservatives have nothing to do with Hitler, his methods, and his collectivist ideology, but suggestion that Hitler was a conservative is a blatant lie that only fools can believe in.

As a matter of fact, NAZI and fascists belong to pathological Left and not to Right. This is why, perhaps, the "Liberals" are trying so hard to distance themselves from these collectivist ideologies.

Many factual references pertaining to the above may be found here:

"Left's Arrogance"

Mike Wilson = hypocrite, Obama nutbagger!
This is the most disingenuous tripe I've read all morning, in a morning chocked full of tripe...

To assert that both sides of the political aisle use violent rhetoric in equal measures is simply delusional - something you tell yourself in order to sleep at night, and to draw a paycheck from hateful bigots and soulless plutocrats.

Also, well done reciting the Daily Kos talking point, straight from your Tea Party overlords. Make sure you take their word for it, without checking to see if it has any merit. You have a brilliant future in content-less and ignorant mass media, my son...
Nice one David.

Lump of Degeneracy: With A-holes like you screaming about who is a real 'merkin and who ain't, I think I know a Christian when I see one. I also know a D-bag when I hear one, Lumpy. Stupid, 4-toed cracker. What is left to say about Sarah Palin, she is so done.

Yo, now win me over with all your slick talk - from Rush's butt to your big mouth.
@civil westman:
And what of Ann Coulter?
Shame is just one more casualty of the march to a centrally planed life for all. The answer by the main stream media to that famous question asked of Joe McCarthy is "Shame? Never heard of it? What's all this talk of Shame? What's Shame? Does 'Shame avoidance' keep us in control? I don't think so!"
Very well put. Our times are truly Orwellian. Fox and talk radio offer facts and reasonable opinion on policy (with which some persons of good will might disagree). Ad hominen attacks by these, deemed so blameworthy are almost entirely absent. The response from the left is continuous scurrilous attacks, never a response on the merits. This only works for them because of the support of the MSM. The truly corrosive part is the behavior of the cynical and/or fatuous so-called mainstream media. They echo and amplify the left-wing invective, lending it credence and applying none of the skepticism on display for any conservative thought whatsoever.

The brilliance of the notion of freedom of speech and a free (and balanced) press lies in its practicality, as well as its morality. Practicing these principles provides a safety valve to dissipate political passions. History is replete with examples where stifling political speech leads to political violence. On vivid display here is the left's first political impulse: silence opposition political speech. Here, they are blatantly using a non-political act to further that end. This behavior has the potential to destroy our republic. Shame on them.
I like peanut butter
David's comment below is spot on. This is the most cliched, blindfolded argument I've read on City Journal in a long time. Why are the standards going down?
Thank you for saying so well what all reasonable, intelligent people have been thinking, Mr. Klavan.

Why doesn't Klavan have his own TV show to counter Jon Stewart's? I would watch both shows every night!
O for Heaven's sake, Mr. Klavan, sit down, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself, Is it really hateful to make a connection between an assassination and a target list, especially the target list of a political opponent who worships guns and says things like "don't retreat, reload"? If Al Franken for example had done those things and a right winger had been assassinated, it would be totally reasonable to hold him accountable for his irresponsible demagoguery. Instead you frantically try to cast this as a Manichean struggle between the hateful, morally bankrupt left and the peaceful, virtuous right. Narrative Hysteria indeed, and truly a sad commentary on contemporary conservative thought. I look to City Journal for the reasonable, even handed conservative critique of yesteryear, and am routinely disappointed.
Thought provoking...
John Wellborn Root January 11, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Wow. This is the dumbest and angriest analysis I've read about this whole incident. Ms. Giffords even warned this kind of think might happen, so I suppose she should feel shame too??? There's a reason CITY(s) are liberal bastions, because you have to be to get along in the malestrom of humanity.
You are the one who should feel shame.
So much for reading anything on your site.
I hope they have good food in your alternate universe.
Excellent article Mr. Klavan!
Exactly.
Andrew Klavan, as always, is perfect.
Mike Wilson said: "So Secret Conservative, because crazy people refuse help, they should not receive help? That's, well ...crazy."

Seriously? Let's try to break this down, shall we? Even if a person is offered FREE health care, they CAN refuse it. Can you explain exactly WHAT should have been done in the (alleged) killer's case? He had already been given a clean bill of health by at least one mental health professional. I love the way liberals attempt to change an argument in the middle. If I tell you that the reason your house is on fire is because you fell asleep with a cigarette in your hand, you will jump up, point at me and say "Well, you shoot rabid skunks!"

Typically disjointed, and often leaving me wandering around shaking my head, unable to follow such "logic".

If jared refused medical treatment, how exactly would making that medical treatment free, help?
WOW! In all that I have read about this tragedy over the last few days, THIS is the clearest. That last paragraph says it ALL. Kudos to Mr. Klavan!
The stale trope of a Holier-than-Thou argument always enlightens, always convinces.
Right-Wing Media Smear Moulitsas With Doctored Image
Right-wing media have promoted a doctored image that supposedly shows that Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas used the image of a bull's eye in connection with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). In fact, the original Daily Kos post did not contain an image of a bull's eye.
Even without that dishonest sleight-of-hand, the notion that a three year old post from Markos is equivalent to Sarah Palin's ongoing use of violent imagery is laughable.
ref daily kos and media matters
Black is white! 2+2 = 5! We have always been at war with Oceania!
The left's idea of "coming together" is for everyone to agree that they are the best, they are the brightest, they know best and that we're all going to just do as we're told from now on.

If we deviate from that, then we "hate".

It's that simple.

They are what leftists have always been - arrogant totalitarians.
Ah, City Journal, as always an oasis of sanity in a mostly insane media world. Thank you Mr. Klavan for so eloquently putting in words the types of thoughts that have been nagging me all day. Shame on them indeed. It is high time thoughtful, rational people reclaimed the narrative.
"Hateful Left" doesn't begin to adequately describe the unconscionable actions by the Left against Conservatives. It gives the lie to everything they claim to stand for, such as diversity, tolerance, free speech, gender discrimination -- you name it.

Spend a little time with this compendium of Progressive hate, compiled by Michelle Malkin, herself a frequent object of the Left's hateful spewing.

http://michellemalkin.com/2011/01/10/the-progressive-climate-of-hate-an-illustrated-primer-2000-2010/

Andrew, I second your comments. I think that is precisely what's happening--the MSM liberals are losing control of the narrative. In response, Andrew, please search for truth.
Now if this crazy had picked off the Vice President, that would put the Speaker of the House next in line to the President. Then it would be Katy bar the door !!!!!! Then Big O would not set foot outside the Oval Office, and one-and-a half inch thick steel plates would cover the windows. Makes one quiver.
Disgusting. Using a tragedy to promote your right winged beliefs. This idiot does not represent the left or right. He is a murderer, and that's all. If he was influenced at all, it would have been by the press.

The pundits, both right and left who feel the need to blow thing out of proportion. The pundits who feel the need to show their way is the only way.
I thought after the Ft Hood shooting that the left couldn't sink any lower. Seems I was wrong. But this isn't going to stop until Americans get sick and tired of being the next scapegoat. Our media cannot be relied upon for even a bare semblance of truth any longer. There is no needle of truth in the haystack to search for anymore.
Oh yeas - and pack your six shooter.
Wow, judging from the comment it's obvious that the American people don't want a civil society anymore.
Just pick your dogma, left or right, bury your head in the sand, and never open your mind to the truth.
U.S.A. ? R.I.P.
Shame? There is no shame. There will never be shame. There is only a hardened, Stalinist, cynical strategy to advance a totalitarian agenda using any weapon and any tragedy within their grasp.
EXCELLENT summation of where we are with political rhetoric in America today, but even more so it hits the nail on the head with regards to the leftist narrative! The truth is so obvious as you stated with the failures of so many liberal policies that other governments have initiated that are so far to the left that they must make a turn to the right as we had better do here in America.
Andrew:
Well said. The lefts' ideology is being accepted by the senior leadership in the military. More than a year after the Fort Hood terrorist attack the Dept of Defense is still fighting the reality of terror from within the ranks. They will spend more time on political indoctrination of the troops on accepting and promoting gay agenda via gay affirmative action agendas than on finding the Hassans and Mannings.
Well said.I just wonder if Congresswoman Giffords would condone the unfortunate comments. From what I have recently learned about her, I think not.
Cliff clearly got the brains in the Klavan clan.
"Jasper January 10, 2011 at 7:17 PM
It's people like you with your distorted logic and warped truths that continue to hurt the soul of this country. Your article is appalling."

Wow. You and Mikey Wilson and Joseph P. Uhl must have studied logic and debate together. Your mastery of logic, exposition, analysis and debate equal theirs - zero equals zero.
In order for Obama to get re-elected, the Democrats are going to have to pull out all the stops and outdo themselves when it comes to engaging in the most over the top hateful rhetoric against their opponents.

In the same way that Obama proved himself to be a fraud when it came to his post partisanship, the Democrats as a whole are setting themselves up to be cast as utter hypocrites by making this plea for civility in political discourse a mere year ahead of having to resort to calling anyone and everyone who doesn't vote for Obama a racist.
Under the Law of Moses, false accusations are to be punished as if the accuser had committed the crime of which they false accused their targets. So those who accuse Mrs. Palin of inciting to murder should be punished for incitement to murder (and Al Sharpton and Tawana Brawley for rape.)
Perhaps the best take on the despicable reaction from the left to this past Saturday's murder spree. My only quibble would be the notion that the "Winston Smith Media" is capable of even comprehending let alone feeling shame.
Surely. Alec Baldwin years ago recommended the stoning of a congressman and his family on national television, that low rated liberal talk show host in florida advocated killing the president, and our current one advocates his supporters get in the face of voters and bring guns instead of knives.

Most of these domestic terrorists have motivations stemming from the left, perhaps not being "left" enough, but after all the rhetoric, it's not surprising that their own base is rising up against them.

It's people like you with your distorted logic and warped truths that continue to hurt the soul of this country. Your article is appalling.
Again great article Mr. Klavan. I don’t see any finger pointing from the right on this but there’s more than enough form the left which is overt, patronizing, ignorant and the American people see through this like a water glass. This dastardly event has no molecular whiff or umbilical to the right in any form whatsoever and if there is I have yet to see the evidence, not some twisted assumption on cable news but factually clear and concise evidence. As I stated, Progressive politics is no longer a political narrative in this country. It's over and it’s been over for a while so let’s pray or have your own moment of silence for the victims and their families of this lunatic, making sure Americans, all Americans are there for them if and when they need us as we move solidly forward to 2012.
Very well written and accurately stated...
A Lot of people of the left are shallow minded individuals who are under the sad impression, not to mention delusion that they are God, by the fact that they have this piece of paper that says that they are supposedly smart. They are very insecure little minded people who are searching for something to add substance to their otherwise pathetic little lives
I would like to see records from his computer showing what sites he visited, what if any comments he made and his Bookmarls / Favorites list to see whence he was inspired.

Regardless, the responsibility belongs to the gunman.
"kwells January 10, 2011 at 5:24 PM
Curious Mike, what are your thoughts . . . "

He has none, kwells, he has none. He occasionally picks up the odd talking point from Daily Kos or democratic underground or Huffington Post, but he has no thoughts. Wouldn't know what to do with one, if he had it.
To Lamp of Diogenes and Mike Wilson (where ever you are): Hats off and thanks to LOP. You see, individuals like the Mike Wilson's of the world believe they have the intellectual prowess to convince others of their distorted world, but when confronted by history and logic they begin to crumble and resort to an vitriolic assault on those who disagree with their ideology. Curious Mike, what are your thoughts about the military who protect your freedom of speech?
[A truely desperate defence the the Palin/Tea party ilk phenomenon.]

For Palin or the Tea Party "ilk" to need a defense, they would necessarily have to be guilty of something.

Care to share with us what SPECIFICALLY links Jared Loughner to either Sarah Palin or the Tea Party, crimefighter?
Mike Wilson January 10, 2011 at 5:09 PM
Lump of Degeneracy called me:

"Jeebus - not only a political idiot, but a Christian hater, as well"

I can't answer that. I will let you know as soon as I meet a Christian."

So, let me get this straight - you, an obnoxious Lefty idjit with delusions of gender, with an obvious hard-on for religion, presume to judge who is, and is not, a Christian?? Mikey, you are truly comedy gold. Can you give me a good rant about Sarah Palin? I suspect it would be even funnier than the bovine feces you've been burdening us with, so far.
"Phoenix Native January 10, 2011 at 5:08 PM

Enough said."

Thank you for proving my point about agendas. Yes, Klavan is taking issue with the dishonesty of the Left - that was kinda the point of the article, I believe. Where, in any of the language you quoted, or anywhere else in the article, does he indicate that this is the exclusive province of the Left? Oh, that's right - he doesn't. He is commenting on this instance of the phenomenon, because, mirabile dictu, it happens to be coming from the Left. Quite a difference between pointing out an action of the Left that you disagree with and/or find distasteful, and making a claim that only the Left engages in such conduct.

But, once again, I suspect you knew that, too.
It should be expected that the left make political capital of such an event, as if the right wouldn't do the same. A truely desperate defence the the Palin/Tea party ilk phenomenon.
Lump of Degeneracy called me:

"Jeebus - not only a political idiot, but a Christian hater, as well"

I can't answer that. I will let you know as soon as I meet a Christian.
"But while little useful can be said about the murders themselves, the rush to narrative of our dishonest and increasingly desperate leftist media does have to be addressed." - "Indeed, the Left’s hysterical response to all who disagree with it—that they are racist or sexist or 'phobic' or somehow reminiscent of Hitler—has become so predictable that satirists, from the libertarian Greg Gutfeld to the liberal Jon Stewart, have made fun of it in routines." - "But never mind that, because the Left’s sudden talk about incendiary political rhetoric in the wake of the Arizona shooting isn’t really about political rhetoric at all." - "That’s the hateful rhetoric they’re talking about: conservatives interrupting the stream of leftist invective in order to dismantle their arguments with the facts."

Enough said.

Listen...None of the things the right or the left killed these people. Jared Loughner did it and by continuing the effort to denounce any party encourages people to look elsewhere for blame. The blame goes to the man who PLANNED this and carried it out!"

Preach it, sister. You expressed more reason and insight in 46 words than Mikey Wilson has in all his posts combined. This was the act of a lunatic. It was neither caused by, nor in response to, the "heated rhetoric" of either side. It was the demented act of a demented man.

But, that doesn't stop our "enlightened" and "nuanced" friends of the left from spinning like centrifuges to try, in any way possible, to tie this to their political opponents, does it?
This is even more disgusting than the Wellstone Memorial and Oklahoma City combined. Our lives need to be purged of these maggots that call themselves "journalists." A day needs to come when they are all summarily relieved of their jobs and replaced by honest and objective News Jounalists. We the People need to stop reading the papers that print their bilge and stop watching the news channels that display it for us. Boycott their sponsors. You hear reverend Al say boycott and you can hear cash registers ringing all over New York City.
Thank you, Mr Klavan!
Listen...None of the things the right or the left killed these people. Jared Loughner did it and by continuing the effort to denounce any party encourages people to look elsewhere for blame. The blame goes to the man who PLANNED this and carried it out!

"to try to demonize the heated political rhetoric of the right, with no evidence whatsoever to tie such rhetoric to his actions, is partisan hackery of the worst sort."

And you say the left can't learn from the right."

No, Mikey, I don't say that. I think the left can learn a lot from the right - you just don't, is all. And, in your case, the accurate statement would be that I say you can't learn, period. Fungus, Mikey, you give hope to fungus.

To Lamp:

But, to your second point: I believe that it was exactly Mr. Klavan's point to say that only one side uses this kind of political opportunism and "heated rhetoric"."

Really? Well, then, since you are such a fan of reasoned discourse, I am sure you can point me to specific language in Klavan's article that can reasonably be read, by someone with no agenda, to support your thesis, correct? Point away.

And I never claimed my rhetoric wasn't nasty, but I'm not the one getting my panties in a wad over the allegedly nasty rhetoric of others. I don't suffer fools gladly, and nasty rhetoric seems an appropriate way to express that.

But, then, I suspect you knew that, too - it just doesn't fit your narrative.
Finally someone in the media who is rational and makes sense.
"to try to demonize the heated political rhetoric of the right, with no evidence whatsoever to tie such rhetoric to his actions, is partisan hackery of the worst sort."

And you say the left can't learn from the right.
To Lamp:

You are, indeed, correct. Uhl, like you, resorts to name calling and insulting intelligence as a way to avoid a more meaningful discussion. Let us use the exception to paint all those of a certain viewpoint with the same brush.

But, to your second point: I believe that it was exactly Mr. Klavan's point to say that only one side uses this kind of political opportunism and "heated rhetoric".

Btw, "nasty rhetoric" is exactly what I call your comments.
Nothing I have read in the NYT , Chicago sun times or any other editorial , explains how or why an atheist would be attracted to or influenced by someone like Sarah Palin who is so closely identified with the Christian right.
From one of my earlier posts today:

[Remember: the story mysteriously dies by Thursday, followed by some Democrat using the "Arizona Shooting" talking point to rail against the coming vote on repealing ObamaCare. Bet on it.]

I was wrong. It only took until today:

"Tomorrow they were going to vote to repeal this health care bill — and it’s not going to go anywhere in the Senate — IT'S ONE OF THE REASON THAT THIS GUY WAS ANGRY and pretty obvious that he is, at least from me, where I sit that he’s mentally ill and deeply troubled. I wouldn’t make too much of whatever his political views are." Fmr. Senator Bob Kerrey - NEB

So what proof does Kerrey have to justify his claim that Loughner was angry about the coming ObamaCare vote?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

From Klavan's article:

[As for leftists’ reaction to the Arizona shooting, call it Narrative Hysteria: a frantic attempt to capitalize on calamity by casting their opponents, not merely as racist or sexist or Islamophobic this time, but as somehow responsible for an act of madness and evil.]

In light of Kerrey's remarks, any of you Lefties here wanna further display your ignorance by trying to claim that Klavan's article is off-base?
to paraphrase a quote from President Obama from 2008:
it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to their anti -right hysteria and antipathy to people who aren't like them as a way to explain their frustrations.
Is putting a district in the crosshairs any more to blame than pushing forward deeply unpopular legislation? It seems to me that both can cause the unhinged to fall from harmony.
Oh, and Phoenix Native? I believe that Klavan's point was not that both sides don't engage in heated political rhetoric, but that using the actions of a crazed individual (with, from the facts we have so far, at least, a more leftish than rightish political view, to the extent he had one, at all) to try to demonize the heated political rhetoric of the right, with no evidence whatsoever to tie such rhetoric to his actions, is partisan hackery of the worst sort. But, then, you knew that, didn't you?
Andrew, thank you for your passages today. How thankful I am that there is a viable counterweight to traditional media. Your comments on 'narrative' were spot on.
So, Phoenix Native, my comments to Mikey Wilson and Joseph P. Uhl are "nasty rhetoric"?

But I am sure that Joseph P. Uhl saying "You on the right are cowards of the lowest ilk" is "reason" (since he does not agree with Klavan), correct????

Nice try. You are apparently as much of a simpleton as Mikey.
I can't help but notice that a majority of the nasty rhetoric left on this comment board has been penned by those who agree with Mr. Klavan. How can one reasonably cast judgment and denigrate their opponents for an action (in this case "hate speech") and then immediately resort to the same tactics?

Unless reason has no place here.
Brilliant.

But what do we do with the madmen, Mr. Klavan?
"Mike Wilson January 10, 2011 at 3:56 PM
Now git out'cha bibles"

Jeebus - not only a political idiot, but a Christian hater, as well.

Mikey, you are so stupid, you give fungus something to look down upon.

We have to keep in mind here people that the season of Progressive Politics is over and they are struggling with this fact and will attach anything and everything to center right politics, et al. With a quasi pack mentality they are very good at convincing themselves however we're seeing the frustrated fit the individual progressive mind is now experiencing is by way of the American people saying NO. Look, Progressive’s thought they would have leadership for the next generation and it lasted what 18 months if that. They are done however in their traversing this devastating disappointment they still believe they have the support of a majority when we all know the opposite to be true. But as you will witness just as the NYT has done here, obviously Progressive’s will continue to have the MSM on their side which will only delay the inevitable "I got it" moment. Also Progressive’s, as a centrist Democrat that was lied to her face to get my vote? I want my party back.
"Why not step outside the defensive and sanctimonious posturing for the right and call out for what he knows we need: truly thoughtful, objective, and reasonable civil discourse."

Mr. Stenclik, when, exactly, did that "truly thoughtful, objective, and reasonable civil discourse" exist in the United States? When we declared independence from Britain? Nope. How about when we were debating our Constitution? No, not then, either. During the run-up to the Civil War? Guess not. When debating entry into World Wars I and II? No, not then, either. Civil Rights debates? Nope. Perhaps during the discussion leading up to our military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq? You're kidding, right?

Guess it never existed, did it. We've managed for 235 years, despite the alleged lack of "truly thoughtful, objective, and reasonable civil discourse." And trying to be civil with the likes of Mikey Wilson and Joseph P. Uhl is not worth the effort.
Now git out'cha bibles
What a disappointing article. What we need is a thoughtful, calibrated response to media reporting on this event, but Mr. Klavan casts the entire political debate in this country as a simple war between left and right. Surely he knows that nasty screeds, ad hominem argument, and distortion of facts are endemic to both left and right leaning bloggers and pundits. And surely he knows that the moderate, centrist majority in the U.S. recoils from the dogmatic polemics of both left and right. Then why does he simply throw paint in this article? Why not step outside the defensive and sanctimonious posturing for the right and call out for what he knows we need: truly thoughtful, objective, and reasonable civil discourse.

Oh dear, Dio has resorted to CAPS!!!!

Umm . . . Mikey? Didja notice that the caps were a quote from your fellow lefty, Joseph P. Uhl????? Not only are you stupid, but unobservant, as well.

"Is it any wonder Diogenes never found the truth he was looking for."

Fail, again, Mikey - Diogenes was not searching for truth; he was searching for an honest man. Clearly, I will not find him in you. And if Diogenes were looking for an intelligent - or a self-analytical, or an observant, or a reasoning, or even a thoughtful - man, you would once again be the wrong place to look.

But thanks for playing - your intellectual ineptitude is providing me with enough humor to brighten my entire week.

Hmmm. I guess I read a different history than you, Joseph P. Uhl. But thanks for playing, for being such a brainless tool, and for (finally!!!) presenting us with a lefty who is even dumber than Mike Wilson.

The American Left - living proof that stupidity is not, unfortunately, terminal.
This is pure Wormwood! I KNEW that the right would try to blame the sane people on the left for this atrocity. I presume pointing out the irony of this remark, in a comment to this post, would be lost on one of your, er . . . limited intellectual gifts, so I'll just chuckle quietly to myself.

But I am curious - did it take extensive study for you to become such a caricature of left-wing hatred and idiocy, or is it a natural talent????
Is it any wonder Diogenes never found the truth he was looking for.
Oh, and thanks for the spell check :)

Outstanding attention made to the failure of liberalism worldwide and its fallout.

With the likes of Nancy Pelosi somehow advancing to the pinnacle of American legislative office and thankfully gone, is it any wonder things are circling the drain? Likewise the corrupt Harry Reid working his magic in the US Senate, this won't end on a positive note. There isn't a lick of common sense involved in the decision making that's happening now in Washington and at a time that these oversights will be felt by everyone, including the press, who somehow, it appears, feel they are immune to the fallout. The left leaning Obama compliant press, who can be held responsible for the ubiquitous biased reporting will be out on the streets like squirrels in their tailored rags hunting for nuts like the rest of us... The press evidently can't see where this is headed!!!
Thank you for putting into words what the majority of Americans believe.
Thank you for putting into words what the majority of Americans believe.
Labeling people "left" and "right" does not help anybody or anything. Stop seeing things through the distorted lens of party lines and you might start to see the simple truth. As long as people can make money smearing "the other side" then problems will persist. Americans need to start working together and stop feeding the ignorance and hate.
Bless a few good people for reporting a balance view of the killings. fox is the only news that trys and they get the s--t kick out of them by the ////SO CALLED MAJOR NETWORKS.

This family does not watch the MNT.
They're like rats caught in a corner. Out come the claws and fangs.
The Apostle Paul wrote about men who sell their souls to gross immorality (including homosexuality) and "suppress the truth in unrighteousness" along the way. Doesn't that describe much of the Left media and blogs?
Shame on them, indeed. But what we've learned about the left, over and over, and over again, is that they have no sense of shame. None at all. They are singularly fixated on politicizing everything in their small devious world, eagerly assigning guilt to the guiltless to further their political ambitions, while exalting themselves as the paragons of "virtue and goodness".

Their ghoulish effort to tar a majority of Americans who happen to support the Tea Party movement and the Constitutional foundation for which it exists, as being complicit in the events of a heinous Saturday afternoon in Tuscon will no longer be tolerated.

This time, the left has taken a step too far. Their irresponsible, reckless and hateful agenda has been exposed worldwide. They have ignited their own dynamite, and decided to stand proudly right next to it.
The "Tone" of our Country should start at the top.................

“Don’t you think we’re not keeping score, brother” – Obama

“Bring it on”- Obama Regime to The American People.

“Get ready for hand-to-hand combat with your fellow Americans” – Obama

“I want all Americans to get in each others faces! – Obama

“You bring a knife to a fight pal, we’ll bring a gun” – Obama

"Republicans are our enemies"--Obama

" punish our enemies " -- Obama

Thank you for a reasoned, factual article.
You hit many ' nails on the head' with this piece.
And saying 'shame on them' won't faze the Lefties-- they have no sense of shame, because " winning at any cost " is all they truly care about. AND much of the media protects them & contributes to the biased message. Not to mention most of the Hollywood types.
THAT'S a lot of people who have access to a microphone or news column, all spreading and fostering division -- just to achieve their political agenda.
Very well said. It is the narrative of the left that needs to be countered and never left unchallenged.

The people on the right tend to try to appease the left in order to be liked often at the expense of doing what is right. The left often deflects valid criticism with cries of racism and hate speech in order to end the debate.

Silence is often interpreted at concurrence. It is time to be silent no more.
Great article. It's a sad commentary that there are so many individuals who only want to gain political advantage from this tragedy. Even the sheriff of Pima Co. where this tragedy occurred believes that this was result of political vitriol yet he has nothing factual or concrete to support that believe. Here lies the progressives core and double speak. Take a tragedy and excite other progressives by sighting those who oppose the progressive movement as the responsible party. Then deny that their message is vitriolic in nature. The progressive logic and circuitous question is how can anyone claim that they are being vitriolic when they are sighting vitriol.
"Mike Wilson January 10, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Oh-oh. An Arizona sheriff with "known liberal views." The "left's cold dead fingers."

We got your narrative allright."

Congrats. Trifecta of stupid achieved.
The bottom line is this. The left, Democrats, Progressives (whatever you want to call them)are desperate. They see their policies rejected by mainstream America. They can't fight back with facts or a successful record. They resort to incendiary comments, bashing, and whatever negative rhetoric they can to get people to believe that the culprit is the right and those who speak out for the right. Americans are smarter than this and will no longer buy this nonsense. This man who shot Gifford and others is a very disturbed individual. He is the one at fault, not the right wing fringe. I wish journalists would grow up and base things on facts and not speculation or idealogy. Hey theres a novel idea---report on the facts!

Oh, and did I mention these murders occured in Arizona...but, no, there just isn't any connection at all to be made between Az. and ultra right-wing haters. Oh no.

Good ice T.E.A. though."

Wow. Incoherent, partisan, stereotyping blather, in BOTH of your comments. Post again, and you'll have a trifecta of stupid. Or, you could just STFU, and spare us your partisan BS - we get enough from Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz - the REAL spreaders of hate.
Oh-oh. An Arizona sheriff with "known liberal views." The "left's cold dead fingers."

We got your narrative allright.
Sometimes, when reading comments left in response to City Journal articles, I get the feeling the Left has targeted City Journal writers. How else can you explain the parade of illogical nitwits who immediately pile on after each submission?
So Secret Conservative, because crazy people refuse help, they should not receive help? That's, well ...crazy.

You should change your handle to SEC-CON. Sounds more militarist.
Well said. The sad part is, as perfect an illustration this is, it will never be understood or paid attention to by those who need it most.

It's their determination to push the narrative that make me more determined to spend money that doesn't flow into "their" coffers. Or at least make sure better percentages end up in others pockets. For instance: I just purchased 3 of your books.
Let's not overlook the thoroughly unprofessional outburst from an irresponsible Cowboy Sheriff with known liberal views. Where's the outcry about his inflammatory and false behavior? None, he's used as a hook by the slavering left
with similar standards.
"I blame guns" is like blaming the paper for the Communist Manifesto, or the doctor's instruments for Jack the Ripper's murders. Think of something new lefties. You cannot have our guns.

You also cannot have our speech. No one encouraged these acts. Every disagreement about politics or the Constitution is no "hate speech". That's the last line used when a leftist is losing an argument.

How about blaming the killer and no one else? Novel idea.
Absolutely spot on, Andrew. The narrative will be, if I may be permitted this in the midst of the present hue and cry, the last thing we pry from the left's cold, dead fingers.
Let's all take a good look at the violent rhetoric spewing from the Right in this country:

Secret Conservative January 10, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Mike Wilson: Re: Your statement "BTW: I suspect Mr. Louthner is without adequate medical coverage for his illness. Too bad, that could have made all the difference."

Were you writing that facetiously? Or were you serious? Because mentally ill people are notorious for NOT wanting treatment for their mental illness. I don't care WHAT the health insurance laws are, mentally ill people are the last people to judge their own sanity. As someone who has a few mentally ill people in the family, I speak from experience when I say that getting treatment for someone who is truly mentally ill (not just mild depression or other neuroses) is extremely difficult. These people believe that THEY are the sane ones and the rest of y'all are NUTS! Plus, the law does not allow the family to force a mentally ill adult into treatment. In order for that to happen the person must PROVE to be a danger to themselves or others. Which means, s/he has to HURT him/herself or someone else FIRST. Then they can be forced into treatment. This is the result of liberal laws that protect the rights of mentally ill people to remain mentally ill. In the meantime they are ticking time bombs for the rest of us.

I agree with Andrew that the haste with which the liberal media went on record blaming Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, the Tea Party movement, blah, blah, blah is disgusting. And they will NEVER admit that they were wrong in this, no matter how often it is PROVED that they were wrong. Because it doesn't matter to them what the TRUTH is, all that matters is that their LIES and speculation are published/heard/viewed and get out there into the public discourse.
The Congresswoman HERSELF spoke about Sarah Palin and the crosshairs hit list. This woman endured her campaign office front door being shattered and someone else who dropped a gun at another of her town hall meetings. Therefore, the woman who was shot feared that what happened would happen. How can you dismiss that? How is that a liberal attack? Three seperate events with apparently 3 seperate attackers? How is that mere rhetoric? No my troubled friend, Palin gave the encouragement and approval for this hit job...that is something she must live with whether you acknowledge that fact or not.
The irony of the blame-game is that the Left is driven and organized by chanting slogans and violent rhetoric, from Moveon.org's hate-Bush to the shrieking harpies of CodePink, to the black-masked vanguard Anarchists calling to "smash Capitalism!" at the G20 summit, it's a feature which they project upon the Right, but one that is really not a characteristic of the Right.
Hello pot, nice to meet you. I am the kettle, and you are a hypocrite. Try learning the difference between 'facts' and opinion, then share what you learned with your right-wing teabag colleagues.
Dear Ian,
When will you furriners learn to butt out? We are well able to sort out our freedoms, nasty as they sometimes are. If you like your gunless society, continue to live there.
[As for leftists’ reaction to the Arizona shooting, call it Narrative Hysteria: a frantic attempt to capitalize on calamity by casting their opponents, not merely as racist or sexist or Islamophobic this time, but as somehow responsible for an act of madness and evil.]

Nail, meet hammer. Spot on, Klavan.

What you're seeing now is exactly the same template the Leftist media used with the Shirley Sherrod story: strike against the Right while there's ambiguity in the details, then simply abandon the story as details emerge that either exonerate the Right or indict the Left.

What have we got so far with Loughner?

- A friend describing him as "left-wing, quite liberal".

- An admiration for the "The Communist Manifesto".

- Antipathy towards Giffords that dates back to a 2007 encounter with her, at least a full year before anyone had even heard of Sarah Palin.

- Today's revelation that he's 9/11 Truther.

Now, I'm not claiming that these facts indicate that Loughner's actions were inspired by any left-wing positions. Looking through the details of his life that are known thus far, there are other parts of his biography that many would claim tie him to a right-wing ideology: his admiration for "Mein Kampf", his fears of a "New World Order currency", etc.

What is clear is that all of these contradictory political beliefs, spun together with various conspiracy theories and coupled with his horrible actions on Saturday, indicate that Loughner is a SERIOUSLY disturbed individual who was desperately trying to make sense out of his delusional mental state. IOW: a text-book example of a schizophrenic.

But none of this is giving the Leftist media ANY pause whatsoever. I'd wager that many dropped to their knees and thanked the Ghost of Marx that it occurred on a Saturday, thus giving them two full days of coverage with which to hammer the Right with impunity while most of the country was distracted by their weekend activities, only catching snippets here and there about "Democrat shot", "extremist shooter", and "angry rhetoric from Beck, Limbaugh, Palin". Now that weekend is over, people all over the country are going to start looking on the intranet for more detailed information about the shooter, and they'll find out about the "quite liberal" and "Communist Manifesto" stuff.

As such, just sit back and marvel at the speed in which this story mysteriously recedes into the background come Wednesday or Thursday - just like the Sherrod story did after about 5 days. Because by then, there will be too much FACTUAL information circulating around regarding Loughner's left-wing tendencies; thus, if they keep talking about it, they leave open the opportunity to be rebutted. They can't risk that occurring, so...the story goes away.

Besides, they'll have accomplished precisely what Klavan is talking about: creating a NARRATIVE that this was all about "violent right-wing rhetoric", thus giving Leftists and Democrats "Arizona Shooting" talking points to use as a means of squashing ANY opposition to their agenda over the next few years.

Oppose ObamaCare? "Continuing to rehash this issue is what leads to events like the Arizona Shooting!"

Oppose ever-increasing federal encroachment into your life? "It's just this kind of govt-hating rhetoric that lead to the Arizona Shooting!"

Want the border secured? "This sort of demonization is what leads to events like the Arizona Shooting!"

Calling for fiscal austerity by govt? "Cutting funds to vital federal programs may result in the sort of desperate, politically-motivated actions we all witnessed in the Arizona Shooting!"

Fortunately, the Left's days of controlling the narrative are over. There are simply too many readily available avenues for gathering information now. But that won't stop them from trying.

Remember: the story mysteriously dies by Thursday, followed by some Democrat using the "Arizona Shooting" talking point to rail against the coming vote on repealing ObamaCare. Bet on it.

The Left is gonna run with this theme all the way thru the 2012 elections if they can, and that is scary as hell to think about because there are so many that will buy into its irrationality.

I ran across an interesting and on point comment in one of the blogs. Contrast the media handling of this story with how the Fort Hood massacre was handled, and how everyone was repeatedly exhorted to not "rush to judgement" about the murderer who was, in fact, a self-proclaimed jihadist.
Clearly you have little idea of what schizophrenia really is - I suspect you may be right and that the young man was psychotic in some way, but your rush to diagnosis merely betrays your ignorance.
When will you Americans ever grasp that it is the easy availability of guns that results in these repetetive tragedies?
My first recollection of turning a politically violent act into a tool for partisan reasons was the Kennedy assassination. As a college student I followed the events but with an inexact sense of your politics (I am Canadian). Based on the commentary of the time I thought that Oswald had to be a right wing extremist, a John Bircher. The fact that he wasn't only became clear later but not based on analysis and comment from that era's leading commentators but from personal reading and thinking. This is not to excuse the nutbars on the extreme right but to realize that the analysis offered at the time was incomplete and deliberately misleading. It served the interest of the commentariat then as it does today to put a spin on it that reflects their political goals. That is the case with tghe Tea Party. The comments about the Tea Party are so over the top. Why? Because their authors know that to debate the main objective of the Tea Party, that is, smaller government, is a guaranteed loser. So, in that case, as it was said in Yes Minister, you play the man and not the ball. I fell for the tactic a long time ago but never again.
You are a sane man Andrew Klavan. Many thanks.
Ritchie The Riveter January 10, 2011 at 12:50 PM
The Narrative requires that incivility be equated with "hate" ... yet civility in response to intellectual dishonesty like that we are seeing from so many of our leaders is counterproductive in the defense of liberty.

And it is no accident that Ms. Palin is their target of first choice ... for any success on her part in shaping the thinking (as opposed to mere acceptance of The Narrative) of the nation is a direct threat to the credential-based self-esteem (not to mention their mellow regarding their lifestyle choices) of the Re-, er, Progressive base ...

... as well as a direct threat to the relevance and meal tickets of the professional/political class of both parties, who (rightly) see such success, by someone not groomed and controlled by their conventional wisdom, as having the potential to render their services as obsolete as the buggy whip.
Finally some sanity.
nohype, as someone with a long history in publishing and a short one in target shooting, I can tell you with certainty that you can buy crop marks (or registration marks in color printing) in a variety of style on rolls that allow you to peel 'em off and stick 'em down. A crop mark indicates "at this location." Crosshairs would indicate "I'm aiming at this."

Even if you prefer the notion of crosshairs, we should no more expect our fellow citizens to act out in violence having seen such a symbol than we should expect to have our car stolen because we left the key in it.
Mr. Klavan, you have resorted to the oldest trick in the book where every change is a change in topic. Talk of world-wide jihad, Lieberman in effigy, Palin, economic crises, Hollywood luminaries - I'm surprised you left out Guy Fawkes.

I spent a good part of Saturday afternoon watching this heinous act unfold on Fox News. I must admit that the coverage was pretty good, with 2 exceptions. If Shepard so-and-so of Fox told us once that the congresswoman was a "Blue Dog Democrat" he told us 300 times. He listed her Blue Dog street cred as a gun-totin' 2nd amendment advocate, as a person who has a problem with government spending, and as one of the happy 19 to have voted against Pelosi as minority leader.

Never did he mention that Giffords voted for the health care reform bill, the stimulus or bank regulation.

Only once did he mention that Giffords was a republican before she was a democrat.

If Shepard so-and-so mentioned her blue dog status 300 times he must have wondered aloud at least 120 times as to how Loughner was allowed to "slip through the cracks." The implication being, yet again, that Obama is not keeping us safe.

Shep's question should be an easy one, Homeland Security, FBI et al are not on the watch for home-grwn, right wing, insane extremists with 9mm Glocks and 100 rounds. They are busy looking for islamofascists with bombs in their underwear and Koran's in their Levis. But perhaps now they should be.

Then there is the small matter of Sharron Angle's political philosophy of 2nd amendment remedies - seems cogent to the matter at hand, wouldn't you say.

If Loughner's mutterings on the internet or in the Safeway parking lot were complaints about the lack of a public option, you might have a case. But they weren't. Instead he ranted about the lack of grammatical correctness in the Constitution, a complaint very similar to the Tea Party's constitutional cherry picking for the "grammar" they prefer.

To argue that Loughner is insane and therefore couldn't be motivated by politics is to lie. Extremist political barkers of all stripes (in this case the stripes fit the right)yearn for a crazy person to act out their fantasies - whether these fantasies are known to the barker de jour is anyone's guess.

BTW: I suspect Mr. Louthner is without adequate medical coverage for his illness. Too bad, that could have made all the difference.
Very well said Mr. Klavan. I could not agree more with your observations and insight.
"The Palin ad depicted rifle crosshairs on several lawmakers’ names, including Gifford’s, indicating that they were targeted to be voted out of office."
Maybe not. The symbol of "position indicator" resides at unicode 2316, and it probably exists somewhere on your computer so that a web browser can display it when it is used on a web page. What is a cross hairs for some is a position indicator for others--do you know what the intent was of whoever made that map? Google "unicode 2316" for more information on the character.
Excellent article.
"The Palin ad depicted rifle crosshairs on several lawmakers’ names..."

The Palin ad depicted printers' crop marks, which look only superficially like rifle scope crosshairs.
What about all the hate that was directed at George W. Bush for the last 7 years of his presidency? The left spewed the most ugly invective day after day after day all in the name of free speech. It was awful and it hurt our troops in the field yet the left kept spewing and spewing and spewing. Remember that? How soon we forget.
"Where incendiary political rhetoric truly resides in America"

How about in the White House Mr. Klavan? Where the president makes incendiary statements to hispanics like, "punish your enemies?" Or maybe his statement before the election, "If they bring a knife, we'll bring a gun?"

How about Obama's constant stirring of racism?

How about his constant lying and cheating?

You want to place blame? Start with him.

Truer words were never spoken, sir.
Well said.

May the Lord have mercy on the souls of the victims.

RE: It's ALL....

....just so much 'projection' on the part of 'liberals' and 'progressives'.

[Liberals aren't. Progressives won't.]
This narrative will have more difficulty gaining traction than after the Oklahoma City bombing because the internet provides a free speech alternative to the legacy media which is sinking of its own weight as the world passes it by.
That's the bottom line: The Left despises anyone who questions their narrative. How dare we? They've employed the same tactics throughout Obama's reign: Marginalize, denigrate, dismiss, and insult those who won't just shut up and swallow the meme.

Unfortunately, there are some butter-brained people out there who will take the act of a lone leftwingnut schizo, and add it to their growing list of conspiracy theories and hatred of the Tea Party.

The DemLeft: The New Party of Hate
Excellent article...the truth for a change! I hope this ends up going viral for all who have ears to hear.
Say it loud Andrew. I subscribe to PJTV and can't wait for "on the culture". Keep up the good work.
Great Article!
This is right on. the left ignores the corruption and lies. The says it's the Right who are advocating violence. it's sickining and criminal for news agencies to lie to the public. ex: van jones currently calling for revolution on the streets. frances pivin openly urges the same. the black panthers are advocationg violence and the overthrow of our government. This administration is backing subversive groups as we speak....every communist organization are approved by our presedent and his appointees.
The lame stream media IGNORES this and uses a psycho to call the right responsible for this lunatic?
ha
1. This man had been stalking the congresswoman for three years, before either the tea party or Sarah Palin were in the public consciousness.

2. This man had no apparent affiliation with any political group or movement. His writings are a jumble of unconnected ravings. There is no evidence that the "politically charged environment" of our time had anything to do with his act.

3. Multiple witnesses have attested to this man's emotional instability.

4. America has lived through far more "politially charged environments" than our current one.

5. No specific instance of "charged political rhetoric" by the tea party or Sarah Palin or any leading conservative has been or can be cited by the media to support even their implications.

This is an astonishly bold effort by the Leftist complex, acting in savagely opportunistic unison, to stigmatize and silence political dissent. The goal is to intimidate into silence anyone who might think of challenging the governing regime.
Why is the left eerily silent when muslims kill innocent people en mass, on a daily basis no less, but when horror like this happens, they become unhinged at us?
I am beginning to believe that we live in parallel universes. We each look down from our vantage points and cherry-pick the "truth" as we see the "truth" from where we stand.
Our perception is all there is, and all there ever will be.

Socialistic Left: Conservative expression causes violence... Big Brother says this is the only narrative allowed!

Conservatives: Big Brother, you are a loser! And Americans will not allege themselves to losers! Your leftist narrative is pea-brained. Grow up! Mature! Get wisdom!

Political leaders, according to history, have always been targets of violence. The writers of the Second Amendment KNEW guns in the hands of people keep a check on the governing body. They foresaw that madmen would be attempting to execute the U.S's leaders. And they lived with that choice, because absent guns in the hands of the people... Federal power would go into unchecked tyranny... as proven by degree in relatively unarmed New York, Illinois, California and D.C.

Our founders calculated the risk, and said it is the only risk worth taking. Decentralized power in the hands of the people, cures all... despite the occasional tragedy. (Similarly, car wrecks bring tragedy, but cars are tolerated for the general good they bestow upon us!)

We must immediately stop believing the lie-packed narrative of the left... and embrace the mature truths of our Founding Fathers.
It reminds me of the guy who flew a plane into the office building. The left accused the Tea Party of influencing that derranged person, when in fact, he was a left wing loon. When the facts came out, the main stream media stopped reporting. Nobody at this point in time knows much about this derranged persons motives, only thing we know for sure, is that this young man is a very sick individual. This is no time for the blame game, it is time to pray for those who lost their lives and those wounded. Shame on the New York Times, and any media outlet for jumping the gun !
Great read, Andrew. I remember sometime last year (or maybe the year before?) you compared leftists to Splicers in Bioshock, and I almost fell out of my seat laughing. I still laugh when I think about it because it's just so true. :)
You are a part of the problem, not the solution.

What will New York socialists do when Congress passes a national concealed carry law?

Socialist New Yorkers need to understand they have lost their dominatrix position enabling them to have their will on the nation.

Reason, not B.S., will rule the day! Turn about is fair play. Oiye!

Comes the day, visitors from fly-over-country will be able to carry arms concealed while visiting New York's socialistic paradise!

Mr. Klavan is right on the mark. Here is a comparison of the New York Times coverage of FT. Hood shooring and the one in Tuscon. http://spectator.org/blog/2011/01/10/a-study-in-contrasts-nyt-on-ft
'Toxic Talk' by Bill Press... read it and learn.
The best piece yet on this subject.
See http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2011/01/028104.php for a selection of "targeted" politicians. Hint: These are NOT from Sarah Palin.
Thank you for putting this most succinctly.
They want us to go quietly into the night; in the meanwhile progressives (read:socialist) want to financially ruin our country and lead all of us to serfdom. If this is inflammatory rhetoric, then America has truly been taken for a ride and we, who believe in freedom and smaller government, apparently have no right to be angry. There is nothing wrong with anger and expressing it (obviously without violence). Progressives want us to shut up. That's the whole point of all this MSM blaming conservatives, Tea Party, blogs, Fox, etc.
Jared was connected with Jarrod Taylor of the American Renaissance group that has a philosophy similar to Charles Murray, author of the Bell Curve who was once employed by the Manhatten Institute. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
The news coverage of this horrible incident was absolutely mind boggling. It went on, non stop for 2 days and was inaccurate many times. For the first 12 to 18 hours they concentrated on one person, the congresswoman, completely ignoring the judge that was killed and the other victims whose lives are every bit as significant as the congresswoman, PROBABLY MORE SO. Then they turned on conservatives as they always do and blamed them for the horror . CNN, MSNBC and Fox were obsessed with the story, and of course had the gaul to get the bereaved on the phone and ask them how they felt, now that their loved ones were murdered. "Tell me, mother of slain little girl, how does it feel to know your child was shot in the chest and lay bloodied on the concrete and now is dead? How does that feel mom?"

Lord help us from these mindless news scavengers, these vultures that swoop down and start picking at the carcasses. Where did dignity go? Where did moderation go? Where did respect and responsiblity go? It has been replaced by sensationalism and seedy commentators all dressed up in nice suits and pretty dresses with white teeth and perfect hair. Idiots all!

Another thing: the left is quick to forget its own hatred. In 2006 they even made a mainstream movie about murdering the US president. SICK. Regardless of left, right or moderate, political violence is wrong.
Brilliant, Andrew. I only wish the newspapers in my home country were as honest as this. Instead socialist, government-run media and government-sponsored newspapers blame it all on the American right.

Sickening. They even edited out that the murderer read the communist manifesto.
This sounds a lot like the retardation I hear on talk radio every day. Are you a host of your own show, or just a brainwashed listener?

BTW, you are officially "trying to make political hay out of a tragedy caused by a madman."

Your Mom would be so proud.
Interesting. But I'm at a loss as to how reading Plato or Orwell supports your argument.

I was born during the Depression. We saw WWII news in the theatres every week, plus radio, plus news from our family in Europe.

History records show that "Name Calling" and "Splitting the Population" as a Nazi tactic. Look it up!

History repeats itself.
Dear Andrew, I can appreciate your article in the sense that blaming Left or Right wing politics cannot, in any stretch of the imagination, justify the horrific event committed by this young man. My criticism comes from another place. I see that you have projected that this individual with Schizophrenia and you have nonchalantly linked madness and evil on a few occasions. Im going to assume that Mental Health is not your professional background. I think you are doing a great disservice to the already highly stigmatized realm of mental health illness by blindly associating it with sheer evil. Schizophrenia is the most vicious MHI, but it does not render all with the illness to do evil, actually statistically much less than you think. Just imagine being someone who has a diagnosis of Schizophrenia reading your article and thinking to themselves "this is how the whole world perceives me". Schizophrenia may or may not be the case with Jared Lee Loughner - and I guess we hope that such a violent and seemingly hateful act could be attributed to a severe mental illness due to 'brain malfunction' - but its important to consider alterior factors and not simply point the thumb at mental health illness.
What humbug! It is not the Left that has created the poisonous political environment in the US. It is the Hatriots of the Tea Party Right. What hypocrisy! Talk about hysteria - this piece is hysteria on steroids, and a disgrace to City Journal. Readers of CJ expect better than this from the Journal's authors. shame, shame!
From my point of view (and this view was formed during the really loathsome years of the Communist rule in my Russia), the article of Mr.Clavan is an excellent and unbiased witness to the speed, with which your great country is moved by its Left down and down along our accursed way. But even the better witness is a large part of commentaries to the article: reading them, I feel myself not so in New York-2011, as in my native Leningrad of fifties and sixties. Or, rather, as in some colorful post-scriptum for Ann Coulter’s “How to Speak with a Liberal”… Just a few days ago I’ve finished to read Sarah Palin’s new wonderful book – to think that the author of “Going Rogue” and of “America by Heart” may have anything common with any violence or any sick imbeciles is really sick indeed! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Spot on, Mr. Klavan. The left publishes a map with bullseyes, the right with crosshairs; all use every available metaphor of conflict and competition; BFD. The shooter is responsible for his actions, no one else. There's been far more 'hate' (such an overused word) and vitriol from the left last two days than in any of the robust political speech that led to their defeats in November, and the larger failures of their ideas. Sore losers.
Consider that of the over 100 million adults in the US we have so few crazies lashing out with lethal force. Why we don't have more incidents like this and Virginia Tech baffles me. It is the price we pay for an open society and for not tending to our disturbed citizens. Truly a horrible act, but we can't draw such overwrought lessons from it. Mr. Klavan has hit the mark.
I think you miss the point with your retreat into the politics of the right.
Sure, I agree - greedy leftist unions and bloated government have put America behind the 8 ball as never before, but so have greedy global corporations and the greedy rich who no longer fell obligated to respect a system of progressive taxation which created a large and politically stable middle class.
And hence your country is indeed in political revolt, as it should be given what the powers in control of the country have done to it (in the name of their unions and corporations).
Why don't you admit that the politics of the right are just as blame worthy for the collapse of America's middle class ?
People want the truth, not more of the political rhetoric you espouse (and, as you correctly point out - the left wing media).
Maybe it's time that the IMF just took control because your country is broken and dysfunctional.
You no longer seem capable of facing the truth.
Why don't you prove me wrong and show the world that you can actually function as a truly modern state ? Do what it takes - regardless of the politics - to educate your people and care for their health to a level comparable with your peers.
Are you capable of that anymore? I hope so.
What a joke. The fact that you write thrillers makes perfect sense, seeing the straw man villain of 'The Leftists' you pump up. It must be pleasant to live in such a thriller mindset.
With all due respect to Mrs. Maisch, concerning her comments that the "Extreme Right" is responsible for this massacre, I would like to say that Jared Loughner's classmates have described him as a "leftwing pothead".....
Loughner has written that his favorite books are Mein Kamph and Marx's Communist Manifesto.
This guy was not a right winger. I, personally, am very conservative and I deeply object to people saying that this horrific incident can be attributed to conservatives. Does anyone remember the vitriol and abuse that the Left heaped on George Bush for eight years? Some of them calling for his assassination? This awful stuff goes both ways and it is all our fault.
I've been waiting all day for just this article. Thank you, Andrew.
It's tiring reading article after article about "left" or "right" when both "sides" or "groups" are using caustic language and have elites within their ranks uttering implied death threats (Palin) or explicit death threats (Palin, VP Biden, Canadian professor Thompson) aka urging State Based Terrorism against people such as Julian Assange. These people need to grow the frig up. People putting things into terms of left or right also need to grow the frig up, politics is not that simplistic, so please mature as soon as you can.
I just don't see what "he read books by Hitler, Marx, Plato, and Orwell, among others" has to do with anything. Nor, for that matter, that "he did not believe in God". The vast majority of atheistic bookworms, I suspect, are perfectly harmless.
It's not about the hateful right or the hateful left it's about the hateful language used by anyone who utters it in politics. Palin should be rebuked for her hateful language with implicit death threats against 20 elected officials just as VP Joe Biden and Palin should be rebuked for uttering explicit death threats by calling for the State Sponsored Terrorism to assassination Jullian Assange. The elites, ruling or wanna be ruling, need to be careful about their words as there are dire consequences.

It's about Palin using metaphors of mass murder of 20 of her political opponents is hateful language that just inflames and may actually be a crime under Alaska anti-death threat laws. It's about her issuing a death threat against Julian Assange. It's about Biden and Thompson (a Canadian political professor) doing the same and not being held to account. It's about the ruling elites getting away with murder, sometimes literally and nobody stopping them. It's about holding the elites to the same frigging laws that they hold us to.

The answer to most problems is greater maturity. Political leaders have been targets since the beginning of time. To be a female in Congress is not the same as joining a sorority.

Females in leadership are no less targets than men, so both genders should be prepared for violence, even from the retarded of spirit.

Interestingly, Arizona concealed carry is a shall-issue proposition.

Liberal audiences tend to have less concealed "heat" than conservative audiences. Therefore, perhaps liberal leaders in carry states should encourage friends and supporters to come packing.

Thus, a more mature situation would have friends and supporters having good answer to a fool with a 30 round magazine in a Glock.

An infinitely more immature situation would be more gun control.

In history, the armed-peace-makers might perchance stop the armed-and-crazy violent.

But in crazy land, the unarmed can only hope for peace, rather than use their peace maker, as it were.

To grow in understanding is to have plans A and B. First plan A is, hope nobody shoots anyone. SPlan B is thats somebody armed might provide remedy to the fool shooting somebodies. (Judge, nine-year-old, etc.)

The people who wrote the Second Amendment knew, perhaps, arms could and would be used against leaders such as themselves. Also, they knew leaders such as themselves would enjoy greater unholy powers against a people unarmed. THEY CHOSE to arm the people ... that the people would have power against tyranny, crime and even nut jobs like in Tucson.

This is the terrible math of maturity. It's easy to dislike maturity, except immaturity is far, far, far more loathsome and deadly.

True except for the fact Fox was the first to jump on the "right wing devil" band wagon.
if a democrat had used the same language & graphics and a republican was shot during lunatic's shooting spree...
Andrew Klavan huh? Your name should be Cliff Klavan you sophomoric dunce of a journalist. Join the human party, not left or right. Your first inclination to not write about this event was correct. In the future, kindly go with your first instinct.
I'd like to know when "not believing in God" became part of the criteria in diagnosing clinical insanity, or how it somehow explains why someone would open fire in a grocery store.

The article was spot-on except for that troubling sentence in the opening paragraph.
A good part of hateful talk has come from Omama .With every speech Obama makes he sounds like he is still campaigning. The election is over and he should be the President of all U.S. citizens. But Obama preaches hate like calling the Republicans Hostage takers and such.. Now we see what that kind of talk can lead to.
And the Left now is now blaming the Right.? Wake up America..
Brian Richard Allen January 09, 2011 at 11:52 PM
Doug says the Left is geared to take this incident and use it for its own abysmal political ends.

And that's true. But the Left itself is a Lie and is of needs geared to twist every incident to its own abysmal political ends.

Even one such as this in Arizona, when one of the Left's own, counted on - as is 85% of the Left's support - by the Left to be too damned stupid to know he's being lied to and lied to by the Left to beyond his ability to take it anymore, goes National Socialist Workers' Party/Hitler Left on us!
Thank you.
And finally, the underlying pathology of leftist media gang bangers snaps into full focus, thanks to a perfect diagnosis by Andrew Klavan.

I grew tired of the term "resonate" back (I think) in the late 80's, when pompous movie and book critics tediously worked it into at least half the reviews they published. But I'll drag it out of mothballs in acknowledgment of this article. It resonates with truth.
Absolutely verifiable and thank you, Mr. Klavan
Brian Richard Allen January 09, 2011 at 11:44 PM
.... The Palin ad depicted rifle crosshairs ....

Rubbish. What "rifle?"

And, thus, is the canard perpetuated.

And are even Good Men reminded of Mark Antony's admonition that the evil that men do lives after them (whilst the good is) oft interred with their bones.
Why can't Klavan and others of the "new right" admit that what they practice is what we used to call "reactionary" politics and does in fact fuel irrational behavior as we saw in Tucson this weekend. Klavan, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and too many others have gained a prominant voice only through dishonesty and intimidation. Sadly, too many of our citizens are listening and voting accordingly.
Calls to reload and put in the fireline of a gun may give some people prone to violence the feeling that if a former candidate to US presidency can utter such threats and recommendations, it is quite Ok for them to act on such recommendations. If he is inclined by the tone of the person that the threat is meant literally, he may not doubt a bit that it was meant literally. If on top of that, he is immersed in a milieu full of angry words and outbursts of rage and possibly aggressive actions against a person listed on a hit list, then the future killer may fill legitimated by like minded people and encouraged to pursue in the belief he will be secretely or openly applauded by those like minded people. Besides, reading Hitler, Marx does not make this American him an unbeliever, nor does it make unbelievers people that should be killed because they are unbelievers. It does not make him a liberal. Rather he sounds like all those who are convinced that they are right against all the others. Reading from the reactions of some bloggers supportive of tea party and tea partiers, one can sense a feeling of outrage against those who are pointing fingers at their heated and bellicose rhetoric. It is normal that they refuse to contemplate a possible family resemblance between their angry words and actions and the angry action of a killer. But words kill to, that is why verbal assault is deemed to be a crime. Calls to kill and murder are tapping on the same basic instincts of fear and aggressiveness that caracterise fundamentalist minds who know no doubt; doubt is the very sign of true intelligence. Having no doubt and being self-righteous is the feeling that makes pulling the trigger and shouting threats easy and even an act of heroism
I've just read the above article and it's as hateful as anything he's complaining about. How can you not blame George W Bush for the economic crisis, when he was in power. How can you not point to Palin's use of the crosshairs as being extremly distatsteful in any context, but especially in this one.

There are extremists on both sides of politics and all are to be condemned, but you choose to be partisan right when a democratic politician has been shot and other died. Your silence would have been an apt gesture to the dead and injured families, your fight to justify the unjustifiable is bad journalism
The irony of this article should be so evident as to be laughable at best. There is nothing laudable about participation in a debate merely because one can find the compulsion to compete for political merit. Perhaps next time Mr. Klavan will stick to his instincts, leave the incident be (apolitical as it were), and remain, without hesitation, in the world of fiction.

An excellent piece. I rarely give credence to political commentary, as so much of it is biased - but this is one of the few times someone has truly written down what I was thinking.

Be on guard Conservatives. I am a Libertarian, but the Left is geared to take this incident and use it for their own abysmal political ends. Fight it and don't allow even more Gov't control as we have too much already from the previous 3 administrations.

Shame on them.
Amy left wing policies with regard to gun control in Washington DC, and Chicago among other places have proven so effective at reducing crime that there was serious discussion last year about bringing in the National Guard to police the streets of Chicago. Give it up.
If he's crazy that means conservatives have successfully weakened gun laws to the extent that an insane person can legally purchase a semiautomatic weapon and carry it concealed
