I really like it when individuals arrive jointly and share opinions, wonderful web site, maintain it up.
It is sad to note that, first Roosevelt and then Truman presided over allowing these nazi allies to remain alive and to thrive.
The Communist and the European anti-semetic ideaologies seemed to flourish in the minds of these leaders.
America is poorer for the continuance of the Democratic Party and its history toward all minorities.
It is quite obvious that the media in this country is complacent in this coverup also.
The elite liberal Jewish left, whose definition of being a good Jew is blending in, using their famous University credentials to bash Israel, while reading the NY Times, and eating bagels and cream cheese....It
is sad, yet it puts in clear relief the reason I and so many of my middle age generation, have moved more right-wing, more Zionistic, more Tea Party and Republican, more towards American exceptionalism, and more anti-Islamist....The left's immoral defense of the ground zero mosque, their immoral defense of deligimization and demonizing of Israel, their turn towards fascism and intolerance and restricting free speech if it differs with theirs (ie. Juan Williams), their distortions and abuse of the media (see Camera, honestreporting.com, and other media watch sights,
and their abuse of the UN has hardened me and I suppose others into taking every opportunity I can to repudiate their ideology, cancel subscriptions to their rags (ie. NY TImes), and vote the bums out this next election.
Soil Sterns is a first class intellectual. It is people like him who will save the honor of the intellectual world as Paul Berman knows. Even in the darkest of days when intellectuals betrayed their calling and took sides with the Fascists of Europe or the Stalinists there were always a few honest souls who stood up for the truth and took them to task.
Those anti-Israel intellectuals and they are not only leftist a number of them like G. Wheatcroft is a conservative Englishman. It’s not by chance that he has an article in The New York Review of Books in their latest issue.
As Sol Stern’s quote shows many of these intellectuals who accuse Israel of being an illegitimate State use language reminiscent of that used by the Nazis which turn Jew into untermenschen:
“Yakira also offers an ironic reformulation of Tony Judt’s complaints against Israel: “Given the fact that Israel is an anachronism and a burden and that the Israelis are infantile, unreliable, and politically hopeless, it is appropriate that we—Jewish American intellectuals, in particular—take matters in hand and impose order on the Middle East. Nor need we take too seriously what the Israelis themselves say, except for a few outstanding figures who tower morally and intellectually above the rest of the country.””
To the German Nazis Jews were “inferior” being not to be taken seriously. To people like Finkelstein and Segev they are just “infants” not to be listened to. The word infant comes from the Latin ‘infant’ meaning “incapable of speech.” Hence Israeli Jews are just babblers who have no say in their destiny.
If Israel is an anachronism and if intellectuals like Segev are up to date that means that Fascist like antisemitism is also up to date.
Actually the abandonment of the Jews by liberal intellectuals goes back much further than that. The 1984 book by Joan Peters, "From Time Immemorial" was assigned to an Arab, whom I believe was affiliated with the then PLO, and stated so in his bio. The review was titles something like "Mrs Peters book" a sexist title that would never have passed muster in those times for any other book.
The book also has the distinction of being reviewed twice by the NY Times book review, the first a favorable review praising her herculean labors in writing the book and the second by an Arab slamming it. From there on I watched the NY Review and the NY Times and soon thereafter canceled my subscriptions to both.
Barack Obama will put an end to all the contaversy about Israel's history and present troubles; he will pull the rug out from under the only democracy in the Middle East.
our old enemies are well known but a growing influential part of the American left is giving them support
Good article. But I still think it took the absolute idiocy of the left and its bias towards Israel to turn (some) of the Jewish intellectuals away from the absolute idiocy of the Left.
I place you in that category as well based on your past history as agitator par excellence.
The truth is that if the Left had not become an enemy of Israel many Jews would have remained very comfortable in the camp of the idiot Left and continued to pursue policies destructive to Western civilization. The only reason they fled that camp is self-interest, not reason. This camp has as its goal the destruction of anything stable, decent, and real in the interest of a utopian dreamworld communitariat. And unlike the idiot Left and many others, I include Israel in the category of something stable, decent, and real.
I call them the idiot Left for good reason. They truly are idiots with a self-destructive bent that is insatiable.
How sad. And how unnecessary.
Intellectual Jews are the worse ennemy of Israel and peace. Their divide is only an artifical exercice to divert attention to the real problems on the ground. They could have taken a long time ago a united and firm position against the occupation and force the US gvt and Israel to comply with international law. Instead they keep bickering at eachother when in fact they do agree on 89 % of the fundamental issues at stake in this conflict.
