We sued the City of Santa Rosa in 2006 to stop the 1,100 acre Gateways Redevelopment Area running through the center of the city. I was elected to the project area committee and I think we were one of the few PACs to ever vote down the creation of a redevelopment project area. With others, my partner and I formed a business and property owners association and non-profit, sued and lost in Superior Court, and then moved up to the Appellate level where we lost again (Tokerud v City of Santa Rosa). The three years that the case took delayed the implementation of the project (which was to include about $30 million for a shopping center parking garage) and now the economy has stopped all activity on it. Given the greed and corruption (call it what it is) in our government and the sheer ignorance and in many cases enforced stupidity of the electorate, what hope is there to prevent a complete financial and economic collapse? Average Californian's are now looking at a future of increasing costs for nearly everything due to our government purposefully increasing the cost we pay for energy (gas, diesel, electricity), building and running a business as well as increasing taxes and fees on our income, vehicles, food, services, home, clothing, and pretty much everything that makes up their lives. In short the future is California looks bleak: Hotter homes in the summer and colder homes in the winter; fewer and lower paying jobs; those lucky enough to work will make less and have more taken out by the federal, state and local government; they will also have to live with more fees and taxes on every aspect their lives; they will have to deal with the constantly increasing number of regulations controlling ever more of their lives; the deterioration of our schools will continue; those in the middle class who start businesses will if at all possible move to another state ; the wealthy who fund most business start-ups and provide most growth capital will put their money to work in states where there is less risk of loss and more opportunity for success; and so on and so on... Thanks to our law makers and selfish, myopic voters over the past three decades, what was once the greatest place in the world has been brought low and worse is nowhere near to finding a way to return to prosperity. The time has come to eliminate the tax exempt status of local and state bond issues. As for California, abolishing the RDAs would be a good start but their real problem is the diversion of local property taxes to the state. Perhaps they would be better off if the local and county governments were to keep the bulk of the property taxes and sales taxes collected in their respective jurisdictions and leave the income tax revenues to the state. If the republicans were to regain control of Congress, this eminent domain abuse needs to be addressed immediately along with the Davis-Bacon Act and the state and local analogues. Its the mentality that pushes for the maximum tax revenue generation of property that must be quelled. As long as the property was purchased legally, is being used in a lawful manner it should not be a decision of a government body on how to best use the property for the purposes of maximizing tax revenues. Under the auspices of Integrity Mayor Margie Rice declared the entire City blighted even though many areas had million dollar homes and beautiful shopping areas. She did all this so we could have a $20 million theater. The best part is the City paid for the entire project and Margie is the President of the non-profit that operates the theater. We also got the Sid something or other Freedom park from Councilman Frank Fry who promised, as did Margie Rice, that private fund raising would take care of the needs of the maitainance of the facilities. Of course that never came to fruition even in boom economic times. Now I have a high school failing 50% of our students, and a new $100 million, yes that is two zero's, Police Station. We are a city of barely 100,000 people. Are they serious?
