If real enforcement is wanted, it should be privatized. Arizona should put a bounty on illegal aliens who are not gainfully employed OR who are not supported or dependent upon an illegal alien who is gainfully employed. The justification is simple - the costs of maintaining persons not gainfully employed.

If it is not to be aimed at aliens, it could just be aimed at persons generally. What traditionally was called the law of vagrancy in other jurisdictions.

How many of us are of the honest opinion that to enable amnesty to illegals is a means to get Obama, et al., re-elected? If given amnesty, they will gain full U.S.citizenship. Of course, they will be grateful to the dems. What other possible reason could there be? You tell me, please.

Good news Heather MacDonald uses the "f" word- the other one- fertility. I am a huge fan, but I delayed reading the piece because I thought I knew what she would say. She has never subscribed to some goofy Unified Field Theory of Humankind, but I looked and never saw the "f" word in her writings.
We need new standards for the journalist-academic-entertainment complex. The "f" word is appropriate and critical for almost all discussions of human issues.
The CIA World Fact Book gives the ethnic break down for nations and tracts fertility by nations- but not for ethnic groups within multi-ethnic nations. It is a start. drfrancisstocker

The people of Arizona cannot have it both ways. If they do not want illegals in their state, they should stop hiring them. No demand, no supply. Cheaper maid or lawn service carries costs that must be paid for in other ways - higher taxes to provide these people and their children with social services.

There are no free lunches. Anywhere.

This is little more than a racist rant. Miss MacDonald could say the same thing about African-Americans, who are not for the most part recent immigrants.

Miss MacDonald is quite clear in her biases. She doesn't like Mexicans. She dislikes the fact that Mexicans have children. She dislikes the fact that some are incarcerated and some do poorly in school. She dislikes providing public services to Mexicans.

She shows the bad side of things, but ignores the cases where Mexicans and people of Mexican descent have done well in the US.
Most Mexicans who come to this country want to work. Period. And they do pay taxes and they are entitled to public services.

This whole rant is basically un-American. Miss MacDonald should be ashamed of herself.

I live in Hong Kong which is similar to Arizona in that we have a very large neighbour with millions of poor people who would like to come here, legally or illegally.

Any police officer can question any person whom he suspects of being an illegal immigrant and, if necessary, detain that person until he/she produces evidence of identity (in fact, in Hong Kong all adults are required to carry an identity card).Without an identity card, most transactions such as getting a driving license, opening a bank account, etc are impossible. Finally, employers are required to check the identity card of any person applying for a job; any who employ an illegal immigrant are facing jail time (usually 3 to 6 months for a first offence).

Hong Kong does not have a big problem with illegal immigrants. It all depends on whether or not you are serious about dealing with the problem.

So the judge has torn the guts out of the law. I hope this is appealed up to the SCOTUS. Then we'll find out where the "wise Latina woman" stands on laws regarding illegal aliens.

P.S. Ms. MacDonald, are you sure the figure regarding illegitimate black births is correct?

Well argued. The bottom line seems to be our choice whether to allow other nations to manipulate our laws and our time-tested founding principles or to insist that they respect our sovereignty as a nation.

Is there a more brilliant, gutsy commentator than Heather Mac Donald?
Well, Gertrude Himmelfarb would be a contender IF she wrote timely commentaries, but Mac’s got the moxie, and she appears to be without peer.
The rationalizations of The Left are “old hat” and remind me of a TV interview decades ago in which a local reporter was arguing with a local black man who was griping about the high number of blacks being arrested in Prince Georges County for possession of illegal drugs. After a painful exchange in which the reporter pointed out that all those arrested did posses illegal drugs, the reporter asked the man if he has any ideas of how to reduce such arrests, and the man replied, “Jis don’t be arrestin’ so many of the brothers!”

As usual, Heather provides information which cannot be found in other forums, such as major city newspapers like the Los Angeles Times. I support legal immigration, even increasing the numbers of those allowed to immigrate, I support Arizona's law which requires police officers to enforce existing federal law.

Heather, please keep us informed regarding this important national issue.

Arizona is going to be just another millstone among many tied around Barack Obama's scrawny neck by the time he exits the scene in January, 2013. He does not know how to pick his fights. And that is just one of many things he does not know about successful governing.Sub Vet WW II.
