When things get down to essentials, consult Genesis. There we learn that God's response to, and thus the remedy for, the first sin was a life of work and worry for survival. That is, absent spritual development, man needs the struggle for survival in order to stay sane and decent. Our current prosperity, absent spiritual development, is a recipe for social collapse. Much of Western Civ's self destructive tendencies are thus understood.
